By: Lita B. Kaufman, RCM Ringside Reporter
Sunrise, FL (October 14, 2013)– It was a Golden Night here at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, FL. World Class boxing broadcasted live by FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes.
There were many celebrities in the audience; Shannon Briggs, Antonio Tarver, Adrien Broner, Roy Jones, Jr and a slew of others identifiable by their dark undercover sunglasses.
Here’s is a wrap up of tonight’s action:
BOUT 1 – Welterweights – 4 Rounds
Martin Lagunas, Jr. from Ruskin, FL made his Pro Debut tonight vs. Larry Yanez 3-6-2 from Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Both men came out very aggressively however, the tables turned on Yanez very quickly mid Round 1. Lagunas, Jr fought like a pit-bull. He pummeled his opponent senseless with fire in his eyes while Yanez’ spirit did not appear to be all there. Yanez showed apprehension while Lagunas showed killer instinct. They exchanged shots with Lagunas landing more face & body shots than his opponent. The fight ended in the end of the second round when a barrage of punches pummeled Yanez repeatedly in face and the ref called it at 1 minute 56 seconds…
BOUT 2 –Welterweights – 4 Rounds
Willie Jones 2-0 from Tampa, FL vs. Jose Angel Segura 2-4-2 from Miami, FL
Not much to report here. It was an uneven match. Jones has a long lean fight style…Lean in, punch; move out to destroy his opponent. It proved to be too much for Segura who was brought to his knee. He then dropped to the mat and never got back up. TKO round at 1:56 seconds….
BOUT 3 – Featherweights – 4 Rounds
Rau’shee Warren 15-0 from Cincinnati, OH vs. Jhon Molina 30-24-3 from Miami, FL Rau’shee sporting a pink fishbone braid for Breast Awareness month I reckon was escorted to the ring by none other than his Band Camp mate Adrien Broner …Molina’s style is to fights low and compact to avoid Warren…Molina came out on the offense but Rau’shee quickly countered and get Molina in trouble mid round 1. Warren clearly has more power than his opponent and more conservatively measures Molina for reach and openings. Warren connected repeatedly with direct blows to Molina’s face and got the last punch of the round as well. In round 2 Molina took all of Warren’s shoots and they seemed to have little effect as he countered back with several body shoots but round 2 goes to Warren…Rounds 3 and 4 show Warren as the aggressor with harder blows and more landings than Molina can counter It was a bit uneven but Unanimous Decision for Warren.
BOUT 4 – Welterweights – 8 Rounds
Errol Spence, Jr. 8-0 from DeSoto, TX vs. Emmanuel Lartey 16-0 from Brooklyn, NY
The undefeated champion and the Olympian seem to have been pretty well matched in speed and skill. Rounds 1 and 2 could have been a draw except for Ice Cold who landed some pretty hard body shoots. Spence shuttered for a moment but quickly rebounded. Spence comes out determined to win in 3
rd round with excellent offense and landing multiple body and head shots. Spence hurt Larety in round 3… Spence dominated round 4 as well…This was the best fight of the night…Toe to toe brawling end of the 4th round both fighters are gasping for breath. In the 5th round much of Larety’s time was spent on the ropes defending the barrage of blows from Spence…Round 6 Lartey came back with a vengeance momentarily but Spence picked up the pace and dominated the rest of this round…Spence looks like the more sophisticated, disciplined boxer while Lartey a brawler…Round 7 Spence is up and ready to roll before the bell again keeping Lartey on the ropes for most of this round as well until late in the round when Larety got in some good body shots. He seemed to have hurt Spence at the end of round 7. Round 8 and the final round Spence up again before the bell but Lartey has Spence on the ropes this time. It momentarily looked as though all of the work Spence put in during the past 7 rounds was wasted in the 8th. Again, it was an excellent fight with Errol Spence winnings by UD…
BOUT 5 – Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo vs. Jose Angel “Silver Boy” Rodriguez – The Main Event – Junior Middleweight
Round 1 – Charlo was more technically sound than his opponent and came out to win. Charlo takes 1 with many more connects and landing more skilled punches. Round 2 Rodriguez came out in different form in appeared to have gotten Charlo into a bit of trouble towards the end of the round. Round 3 was an even match, Round 4 the same. By the 5th round, Charlo started doing real damage to Rodriguez in the middle and end of the round. He certainly slowed Rodriguez down…Nothing memorable in rounds 6 & 7. In round 8, Rodriguez picked up the pace and closed in on Charlo Round following and being more offensive. By round 9, both men were toe to toe exchanging blows and looking for the money shot with Charlo overpowering and annihilating his opponent who had since stopped fighting back. Charlo wins it in the bottom of the 9th when the ref decides correctly to stop the fight…
BOUT 6 – Lightweights – 6 Rounds …
Jeffery Fontanez 12-0 from Caguas, PR vs. Gerardo Zayas 20-21-2 from Navojoa, MX Fontanez was the more skilled fighter and took Zayas down in the middle of the first…Fontanez continued to dominate Zayas in the 2
nd round. In the 3rd round Zayas took Fontanez down and the ref gave him the standing 8 count. Round 4 saw Fontanez’ bruising body shots proved no match for Zayas when he succumbed to a left hook at a bit over 1 minute into the 4th round.
It was a great night of boxing at the BBT Center. The Golden Boy Series next presents Former World Champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver vs. Mike Sheppard in the 10 round main event which will also be televised on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.
