UFC 164 RESULTS- ANTHONY PETTIS IS THE NEW UFC CHAMP & POST PRESS CONFERENCE

By Jared Merkley, Real Combat Media MMA Correspondent

Milwaukee, Wisconsin (September 1st, 2013)– After yet a another stacked fight card, we have a new world lightweight champion, and his name is Anthony “Showtime” Pettis (17-2). He showed perseverance, strength, and the heart of a champion in his hometown of Milwaukee. In the early minutes of the round, previous champion Benson “Smooth” Henderson (19-3) applied great pressure on Pettis with great clinch work, and grappling. Pettis, 26, on the other hand, showed great defense and counter-striking, including three back-to-back body kicks on Henderson, 29. The fight went to the ground early on and Pettis locked in a nasty armbar, thus causing the champ to verbally tap out in the very first round. It was a glorious moment for our new lightweight champion, though he assured the viewers and the UFC there will likely be a trilogy. Afterward, he also called out Featherweight Champion, Jose Aldo by declaring “It’s your belt or mine.” Pettis’s next move? We’ll just have to find out in time.

In the clash of UFC veteran heavyweights, Frank Mir (16-8) and Josh Barnett (33-6), there seems to be a bit of controversy. In the beginning, both heavyweights came out swinging with “The Warmaster” Josh Barnett coming out on top. In just minutes, Barnett, 35, had Mir, 34, against the cage with very clean striking and a well placed knee, knocking former UFC heavyweight champion, Mir to the ground. Directly after, the ref. called the fight as a TKO. Both Mir, and the fans disagreed with the call, calling it an early stoppage in round 1. Despite any disagreements, Barnett sent a message showing he’s back to stay. This was his first fight returning to the UFC after 10 years. He’s certainly a force to be reckoned with in the UFC heavyweight division.

Chad “Money” Mendes (15-1) has done it again as he faced off with Clay “The Carpenter” Guida (30-11). Throughout the fight, it was the same result, as Mendes, 28, out-wrestled, and out-struck “The Carpenter”. Though he kept his usual speedy pace and aggressive pressure, Guida, 31, didn’t have enough to take out Mendes tonight. The fight went down to the last 30 seconds as Mendes landed a huge left, knocking Guida down, then pursued the beat down, causing a TKO stoppage. From the impressive display Mendes put on tonight, he may be next in line to have a second bout with UFC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo.
