UFC 163 RESULTS & POST PRESS CONFERENCE
By Zach Heim
Rio De Janerio, Brazil (August 4th, 2013)– It was a great night of fights in Rio De Janerio, as the UFC rolled in town for UFC 163. There was everything from KO’s, submissions, TKO’s, to unanimous decisions. This card had it all. From young, up and coming fighters, to household names in the world of MMA, even World Champions.
The under card was just as exciting as the main card. We got to see Anthony Perosh KO Vinny Magalhaes in just 14 seconds. It only took Amanda Nunes 2 minutes and 8 seconds of the first round to beat Sheila Gaff by TKO. In just 1 minute and 36 seconds into the first round, Viscardi Andrade beat Bristol Marunde by TKO. John Linker took a little longer to win his fight against Jose Maria. At 1 minute and 3 seconds into the second round, Linker beat Maria by TKO. Sergio Moraes was able to submit Neil Magny with a triangle choke 3 minutes and 13 seconds into the first round. Ian McCall, Rani Yahya, Francimar Barroso, and Thales Leites all won by unanimous decision.
Cezar Ferreira vs. Thiago Santos
Both of these fighters are pretty fresh to UFC. This was only Ferreira’s second fight and Santos’ first fight in the octagon. Both competed on the Ultimate Fighter Brazil. Ferreira won season 1 and Santos competed on season 2. I really didn’t know what to expect with this fight. Less than 1 minute after the bell sounded, I was impressed with Ferreira. He came out quick and rocked Santos. Santos backed into the cage and Ferreira charged, landed a couple more shots, grabbed Santos’ neck, rolled and then got Santos’ to Tap Out due to a guillotine choke.
Lyoto Machida vs. Phil Davis
This was a pretty even fight. Although I thought Machida landed the more damaging strikes, Davis was able to take him down a couple of times and controlled the pace of the fight. Machida fought his normal fight, letting his hands hang to try and bait Davis into coming in and making a mistake. Phil fought a smart fight, and didn’t fall for any of Lyoto’s tricks. Davis took Machida down late in the first and second round, but had his takedown attempts stuffed in the third round. Machida was able to use his footwork and speed to move in and he was then able to land some good shots in on Davis. Machida was just never able to follow up on any of them. I thought Machida won the fight, but he left it in the hands of the judges. The judges then came back with Phil Davis as the winner by unanimous decision.
Jose Aldo vs. Chan Sung Jung
The first couple of rounds were a “feeling out process” for the fighters and kind of slow. Aldo was able to do some damage with a couple of leg kicks and some good jabs. The action picked up in the third round, with Aldo taking the Zombie down, but not able to do much of anything. Herb Dean stood them up and the Zombie went on the attack. He landed some good shots and was able to score a take down of his own before the round was up. When round four started it looked like the Zombie was going to come out on fire. With the first over hand right he threw, Jung separated his shoulder as he hit Aldo in the back of the head. Aldo saw the Zombie try to pop his shoulder back into place and landed a kick right on the injured shoulder, then took the Zombie down. Aldo landed some more good shots from the top. The fight was stopped less than one minute into the 4th round. It probably wasn’t the way Aldo wanted to win, but hey it goes down as a TKO in round four.
All in all you couldn’t expect more from this card. It had a little of everything. It may not go down as one of the best cards ever, but it was well worth the money for the pay per view.
