Teon Kennedy Favored Over Collado in August Bally’s Card
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Atlantic City, NJ (July 13th, 2013)– Former USBA Super Bantamweight champion Teon Kennedy of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, fights the second bout of his comeback on August 24, 2013, at Bally’s Event Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and is favored to win his 10 round main event super feather weight bout over Dominican Republic’s Joselito Collado, fighting out of Queens, New York. The seven bout card will be promoted by Russell Peltz Boxing Promotions.
Kennedy, now 18-2-2, seven knockouts, was in top condition in his previous bout when he dropped Carlos Vinan late in the tenth round of their bout in Atlantic City in June 2013. Boxing patiently but effectively, Kennedy meticulously cut off the ring and walked the defensive minded Vinan down, mixing power shots with body punches and jabs and working Vinan over without being in a hurry. Kennedy got in quality work while getting the rust out, without letting the rugged Vinan find nearly any openings for counters and making him miss repeatedly.
Kennedy, who at age 27 is three years younger than Collado, will have slight height and reach advantage against Collado, and has shown the ability to technically work effectively out of range to win rounds. Against Collado, expect Kennedy to capitalize on the slightest advantage he has to win the first six rounds on the cards before picking up the tempo.
Collado, 13-2 with three knockouts, won a six round split decision over challenger Rafael Lora in April 2011. Collado has lost two close bouts by eight round decision in the last 20 months, to 16-0 Jerry Belmontes and 14-0 Casey Ramos. Collado had Ramos down in the third round but could not finish him. Collado’s most recent win was a six round decision over Juan Carlos Contreras in the Dominican Republic in March 2012.
Teon’s technical boxing ability is very accurate in the number of punches he lands when in top condition, and he should expose Collado, who has been proven a tough survivor but has been unable to win at the eight round distance against world class opposition.
Look for Kennedy to knock out or stop Collado in the ninth or tenth round as he accelerates the pace and breaks down Collado’s defenses. Kennedy was in top condition in his last bout with Vinan, and will box patiently with Collado and probably take him out in the later rounds after getting some work in. Kennedy could take Collado out earlier if Collado tries to slug it out and gets careless, exposing him to Teon Kennedy’s powerful counter shots.
Also appearing on the Russell Peltz card will be light middleweights James Freeman of North Carolina and DeCarlo Perez of Atlantic City in the eight round preliminary to the main event; Puerto Rican welterweights Jose Javier Calderon and Rafael Montalvo in a six rounder; New Jersey light welterweight Nathaniel Rivas faces debuting Julio Rivera of Massachusetts in a four rounder; 4-0 Philadelphia featherweight prospect Anthony Burgin faces Puerto Rico’s Jose Del Valle in a four rounder; 3-0 Philadelphia heavyweight prospect Mark Rideout faces New York City’s more experienced 6-6 with five knockouts Joe Bolden in a four rounder; and Virginia Beach heavyweight Joe Cusomano, 6-1 with four knockouts, will face West Virginia’s 4-6 Kevin Franklin, who went the distance with extremely dangerous 20-1 Eric Fields in 2012 and who has fought world ranked Bryan Jennings.
First bout for the Saturday August 24, 2013 card will be at 7:30 P.M. Tickets for the card are available at $84.50 and $ 57.50 via Ticketmaster telephone 1-800-653-8000 or online at www.Ticketmaster.com, or $75 and $50 at the door of the Bally’s Entertainment Center.
