Miguel Cotto Set to Return Oct. 5th & Chooses Freddie Roach as New Trainer
By Eli Garcia
Elizabeth, NJ (June 8th, 2013)– One of boxing biggest stars is set to make his return to the ring with a few changes. Former three-division titleholder Miguel Cotto, will return with Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach in his corner and will be returning with his former promotion company Top Rank.
On Saturday afternoon Miguel Cotto made his announcement through Twitter:
“I will be back in the ring on Oct 5th on HBO boxing with Top Rank Boxing and Freddie Roach in my corner. “
Top Rank’s President Todd duBoef kept a close relationship with Cotto even with his departure last year, when he left to rival company Golden Boy for his fights with Austin trout and Floyd Mayweather. Cotto
Top Rank has guided most of Cotto’s career and made him into one of Boxing’s biggest attractions. Cotto’s contract with Top rank expired after his stoppage of Antonio Margarito, in NYC, at Madison Square Garden in 2011. Cotto became a free agent after his victory and for his next two fights partnered up with Golden Boy. His last two fights were televised by Showtime , HBO’s rival. Miguel’s deal with Top Rank will also bring him back to the network that televised most of his career HBO.
“There is no long-term commitment,” duBoef said. “But I believe in our relationship and I believe it will prevail over any business transaction. Miguel and I have an incredible relationship, a long-standing relationship. A while ago, I wanted to get together with him and I texted him and told I was coming to Puerto Rico and I wanted to talk to him. When he became a free agent, I understood the Mayweather thing. That was a huge fight for him for a lot of money.
As for his new trainer Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, Cotto Hopes this new change will help him get back on track. According to Cotto’s advisor Penagarciano said. “Miguel wanted to try a few names so we reach out to certain trainer, but it clocked with Freddie. At this stage in his career, he wants to train with Freddie and that’s what we’re going to do and, hopefully, he will be the trainer until the end of Miguel’s career.
Cotto’s last trainer Pedro Diaz who was in the ring with him, when he avenged his loss to Antonio Margarito, have decided to go there own separate ways.
“We have nothing negative to say about Pedro whatsoever. Pedro is extremely good and dedicated trainer but Miguel wanted something fresh and Freddie is a good match”
According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, Cotto is likely to face perennial contender Delvin Rodriguez in a junior middle weight bout. The fight will take place in Florida, at either Marlins Stadium, the home of the Major League Baseball’s Miami Marlins, or the Amway Center In Orlando, home arena of the NBA’s Orlando Magic.
