Sugar Shane Mosley Versus Pablo Cesar Cano Mexican Fight Preview

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

Cancun, Mexico (May 15, 2013)–  Sugar Shane Mosley is attempting another insane comeback at age 41. Mosley, now 46-8-1, 39 knockouts, Pomona, California, will attempt to diffuse Mexico’s Pablo Cesar ‘El Demoledor’ Cano, in the main event of a fight card at Grand Oasis Resort in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico, on May 18, 2013, which is also Pablo Cesar Cano’s hometown. This will be Sugar Shane’s first trip to fight in a bout outside of the mainland United States, where his bouts have mostly been fought in California, Las Vegas Nevada, and Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Mosley has not won a bout since he stopped Antonio Margarito is the ninth round on January 24, 2009, to retain the WBA Super World Welterweight title at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, four years ago. Cano is going off a split decision 12 round loss to Paulie Malignaggi at Barclays Center in Brooklyn in October 2012 for the WBA World Welterweight title, Cano came in 3/4 overweight, opted not to lose it, and thus the title was at stake for Malignaggi only.

Sugar Shane always starts and finishes with jabs, which is what a fighter should do. A lot of fighters don’t do that. Cano is going to try to open with his own jabs fast try to cut off the ring, and set the tempo. Sugar Shane is going to box. If Sugar Shane sees openings, he’ll move forward. Else wise he is just going to box. Shane will move around. Even at age 41, Sugar Shane’s hand speed is superior to Cano.

Sugar Shane underestimated Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao and Saul Alvarez. Shane thought his hand speed would be fast enough to beat them, but he had no game plan. They did, which was to throw punches in bunches out of range.

Shane needs a game plan here. A fighter who goes into the ring without a game plan is a blind fighter. Shane has to be first against Cano, get off his punches, keep working and keep moving. Cano’s game plan has to be to pressure and more pressure on Mosley, and not let Sugar Shane get his punches off. Like Mayweather versus Robert Guerrero, the fighter here who executes their game plan to perfection, Mosley or Cano, is going to win.

Paulie Malignaggi could not do anything with Cano for 12 rounds, but Erik Morales could,  stopping Cano in ten rounds, having cut the left eye of Cano, and jabbing both of Cano’s eyes swollen shut.  The Morales footage features his game plan of landing fast and consistent head jabs on Cano, so the technical framework to defeat Cano is there for Sugar Shane to follow. The only question is if Sugar shane can execute the game plan as well as Erik Morales did.

Sugar Shane is in a technical war situation. He is going to have to win the bout on the cards in Mexico, which is not an easy task. The bout is scheduled to go off at welterweight for 12 rounds, which is a good weight for Sugar Shane if he makes weight. In Mexico, he is going to be better off stopping Cano midway or late like James Kirkland did with Alfredo Angulo and take the bout out of the hands of the judges. As Harold Lederman pointed out during the Angulo-Kirkland bout which featured open scoring, the judges in Mexico had Angulo too close on the cards to Kirkland-when Kirkland was pitching a shutout. The scorecards cannot be trusted in hostile territory, a fact Sugar Shane needs to be aware of before flying to Cancun.

Super featherweight Sergio ‘Yeyo’ Thompson of Cancun, Mexico, 26-2 with 24 knockouts, a hometown local favorite, is favored to win the ten round preliminary to the main event against Houston, Texas tough guy Rocky Juarez, 29-10-1, 21 knockouts. Juarez has been around the block with a solid chin and has never been stopped in 40 bouts, including twice against Chris John, but his world title aspirations are full of frustration. Juarez went 72 rounds between 2005 and 2010 in six world title bouts, going 0-5-1.Cancun, Mexico 5-15-2013,  Sugar Shane Mosley is attempting another insane comeback at age 41.
