Sugar Shane Mosley Is Back! Decisions Pablo Cano in Mexico
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Correspondent
Cancun, Mexico (May 19th, 2013)– Sugar Shane Mosley still has his legendary granite chin at age 41. In his 56th professional bout, Mosley showed great foot movement, great hand speed, and adapted his style from power puncher to frequent aggressor. Mosley appeared in top form, and was never winded, clinching only to pace himself. Sugar Shane, fighting outside the mainland United States for the first time since his professional debut against Greg Puente in 1993 in California, scored a 12 round unanimous decision over game Pablo Cesar Cano to win the vacant World Boxing Council International Welterweight title by scores of 115-113 on all three scorecards, at the Grand Oasis Resort, in Cancun, Mexico, in the main event on May 18, 2013.
Cano appeared winded entering the eleventh and twelfth championship rounds, and it gave Mosley the slight ‘extra edge’ he needed to win the bout. Mosley used a consistent body attack, followed by an overhand power right, to break Cano down. Cano’s entire game was a counterpunch game. He had a number of good rounds, and closely boxed rounds, and landed some decent head counters which had Mosley in trouble several times. To his credit, Cano, who went 12 rounds with Paulie Malignaggi, and 10 rounds with Erik Morales, is a better fighter than most give him credit for. In this bout, Cano clinched frequently after inside exchanges, a smart approach to a world class fighter like Mosley, who won for the first time since he stopped Antonio Margarito at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, in 2009.
Scoring appeared fair. Cano led after four rounds, and Mosley led on two of three judges scorecards after eight rounds, in the open scored system which was in place.
Mosley, Pomona, California, is now 47-8-1, 39 knockouts. Cano falls to 26-3-1 with 20 knockouts, and at age 23 his promising career still has a long way to go.
Result: Sugar Shane Mosley Win 12 Pablo Cesar Cano, Welterweights
Mosley wins the vacant WBC International Welterweight Title
Scoring: 115-113, 115-113, 115-113 for Mosley on all three scorecards
