New York, NY (May 1st, 2013)– Oleg Maskaev won a comebacklast December over Own Beck, and is in preparation for his second comeback bout. Can Maskaev climb back into the heavyweight mix at age 44? He can build a good number of wins if he takes his time with his comeback.

The magical and mysterious career of former World Boxing Council Heavyweight champion Oleg ‘The Big O’ Maskaev began on an unbelievable note. Maskaev scored a third round knockout in 1993 of the late 21-0 unbeaten Kazakhstan heavyweight Alexander Miroshnichenko in his professional debut and retired him! Miroshnichenko was no joke, having stopped Ross Purrity in Japan in six rounds in only his third professional fight in 1990. Purrity later stopped Wladimir Klitschko.

Born in Kazakhstan, Maskaev, a mine worker, could defeat a 21-0 professional boxer in his professional debut. He began fighting in the 1980s in Russia, and was champion of the Soviet Army. A resident of California, Maskaev acquired American citizenship in 2004, and Russian Putin Vladimir Putin granted him Russian citizenship in 2006.

Maskaev won many fights on the way up, though he was stopped by Oliver McCall, Kirk Johnson, Corey T-Rex Sanders, Lance Whitaker and David Tua. A ten fight win streak included Maskaev winning the WBC International heavyweight title by decisioning Sinan Samil Sam, his second stoppage win over Hasim Rahman, and the WBC World Heavyweight title. Maskaev defending the WBC world title by decision over Okello Peter before losing it to Samuel Peter.

After decisoning Robert Hawkins and knocking out Rich Boruff, Maskaev’s career was seemingly ended when Nagy Aguilera stopped him in the first round. Three years later, Maskaev stopped form title challenger Owen Beck in the third round in Moscow, Russia, on December 30, 2012. Maskaev will next fight Jason Gavern in Saransk, Russia on May 26, 2013.

Maskaev, 44, has a career record of 37-7, 28 knockouts. The odds of his getting another world heavyweight title opportunity are slim, but the ex-champion can stay winning and keep busy if he picks the correct opponents for his comeback bouts.
