Baby Tito Wins By Knockout Early, Mares and Floyd On Casino Big Screen

In the main event of an eight bout card at Resorts World Casino Aqueduct Raceway in Queens, New York, on May 4, 2013, co-promoted by Wilson Naranjo’s W.O. N. Promotions, James Foley’s Old World Boxing Promotions, and Felipe Gomez and Kevin O’Sullivan’s New Legend Boxing, rising bantamweight contender Juan ‘Baby Tito’ Dominguez went to 14-0, 10 knockouts, with a third round knockout of Mexican challenger Manuel De Los Reyes Herrera in a mismatch.

The main event showcased Dominguez’ talent and he did not disappoint. Throwing straight jabs and power shots like no tomorrow, Dominguez backed up Herrera and walked him down from the start putting on pressure, finally finishing him for the count with power shots in a corner at 1:16 of the third round.

The quick finish allows the more interesting part of the show. Welterweight Dmitry Salita followed the main event with a unique music video shoot in boxing attire with his entourage. No word on when the upcoming music video will air or the music.

Ring lights then darkened as the crowd at Genting Group’s Resorts World Casino reversed their chairs in the third floor sporting event area to watch the pay-per-view boxing card on big screens all around the room. Abner Mares won the World Boxing Council World Featherweight title with a ninth round stoppage of Daniel Ponce De Leon after knocking him down twice. The WBC Featherweight world title belt is the same one once belonging to the late Mexican legend Salvador Sanchez.

Floyd ‘Pretty Boy’ Mayweather won a 12 round unanimous decision to retain his World Boxing Council World Welterweight title over Robert ‘Ghost’ Guerrero, the WBC interim champion, by scores of 117-11 on all three cards, with the granite chinned Guerrero winning a respectable three rounds on the judges scorecards and by no means dropping his stock even though he was outclassed from the start.

New York State Athletic Commissioner Malvina Lathan cleared up a BoxRec discrepancy which had posted both the Galarza-Thompson and Smith-Mateen preliminary bouts to the Dominguez-Herrera main event as eight rounders. “These bouts were always posted as six rounders with the commission. There was never any change in the scheduled bout schedule with the commission,” responding to rumors the preliminary bouts might have been shortened due to the Mayweather-Guerrero pay-per-view bout which followed. BoxRec, as readers know, is not always correct.

On the undercard at Resorts World Casino, light heavyweight Joe Smith Jr. dropped Hamid Abdul-Mateen in the second round after winning the first round, then appeared to lose the next four rounds as Mateen counterpunched effectively.

However, Smith was awarded a unanimous six round decision. The bout appeared closer to a draw or a one point win by Mateen. Smith’s early knockdown of Mateen could have swayed the judges. It’s hard in New York City, like anywhere else in America, to defeat the promoter’s fighters unless you knock them out.

A marvelously physically conditioned 5-8 Jason Thompson had to settle for a draw in his six round light middleweight bout with local favorite Frank Galarza. 2-3 light welterweight Ray Velez knocked down 5-1 Angel Garcia and won a six round split decision upset. Former world champions Juan LaPorte, Junior Jones and Amanda Serrano, heavyweights Monte Barrett and Vincent Maddalone, and welterweight contenders Luis Collazo and Dmitry Salita, were among those boxers in attendance.
