Ageless Vic Darchinyan Getting Better at 37, Maybe Rigondeaux Next
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Correspondent
New York, NY (May 15th, 2013)– Armenian super bantamweight southpaw Vic ‘Raging Bull’ Darchinyan, 37, remains on the edge of both the bantamweight and super bantamweight divisions. With his fourth round stoppage of Javier Gallo in Laredo, Texas, last week, Vic has served notice on other bantamweights out there: he’s sharp, he’s bad, and he’s back.
Vic decisioned 16-0 Luis Orlando Del Valle over ten rounds at Foxwoods in September 2012 to win the NABF Super Bantamweight title, winning 99-91 on two scorecards, a tidal wave. Before that, Vic appeared in world or regional title bouts and eliminators in 223 of his previous 24 bouts! So it’s easy to see why talking about Vic in a nontitle bout could appear out of character for the man.
Vic began his career in Sydney, Australia, with a six round decision over Sande Kizito in November 2000, winning 25 fights in a row and the IBF Flyweight title by stopping 30-0 Irene Pacheco in the eleventh round at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood. Vic defended the IBF title seven times before losing it to Nonito Donaire. Vic went on to win the WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO Super Flyweight titles. The IBF, WBC and WBA Bantamweight titles proved more elusive, as Vic has tried but has been unable to win them. His record currently stands at 39-5-1, with 28 knockouts.
Maybe a southpaw versus southpaw clash between Vic and Guillermo Rigondeaux could be on the horizon for Vic with his latest two wins. For one, it’s an exciting matchup. For two, Vic versus Rigondeaux is exactly what boxing promoters and fight fans are looking for. If not, then match Vic against anybody in the BoxRec 25, which will to keep Vic busy till the big fight.
Darchinyan versus Rigondeaux is what the public wants and needs. Give it to them.
