Sergio-Martinez-vs-Martin-Murray

Sergio Martinez vs. Martin Murray Preview

Feeding Time in Argentina

By Tom Mauriello

Buenos Aires, Argentina (April 27th,2013)– The riddle that is Sergio Martinez (50(28)-2-2) has yet to be solved since his majority decision loss to Paul Williams in 2009. He is an elusive athlete with superior quickness to the majority of the contenders in the middleweight division. He is hard to hit, and throws accurate punches from odd angles that accumulate damage throughout the fight. They call him “Maravilla” which is Spanish for wonder, and he never falls short of that when in the ring. He is a tough, blue collar fighter who has never avoided anyone in the ring. He is never afraid to exchange, and is always in an entertaining fight. In his last outing, after 11 rounds of domination to the younger Julio Cesar Chavez JR (46-1-1) Martinez was hurt badly by a set of punches, and was able to get off the mat to finish the fight and take home the victory. Besides demonstrating his superior speed and clever boxing skills, Martinez showed the kind of heart rarely seen in this sport. He did not run, he did not hold, he sat in the pocket up 11 rounds and traded with the dangerous puncher in the center of the ring. This shows us the type of fighter Sergio Martinez is. He is not afraid to fight, and has the confidence in himself, even when he hurt, to stand and trade and continue to dominate a fight. It is this quality that will lead him to victory this Saturday night at the Estado Jose Amalfitani Stadium in his native town of Buenos Aires Argentina as he defends his title against the undefeated Martin Murray (25(11)-0-1) of the United Kingdom.

Sergio is prone to hitting the canvas as he has been dropped in several of his fights, including his TKO loss to Antonio Margarito in 2000. Martin Murray out of Ricky Hatton’s stable of UK fighters, does not have the pop in his gloves to put Martinez on the mat. Murray is a sound, disciplined fighter who will be picked apart by the superior Martinez in a fight that I personally feel is a large miss match. Murray has yet to see a fighter with the movement of Martinez. His patience and high handed boxing defense will be no match to the savvy Martinez. Martinez will counter him and punish him with blows that the Brit will not see coming, and this fight will end in an eventual stoppage. After a solid performance against the tough German former champion Felix Sturm which ended in a draw, Murray earned the respect of the middleweight division when many ruled him out of a win over then division ace Sturm. But fighting Sturm on the Road, and Martinez in Argentina are two different monsters. Murray and the world will see a different side of Maravilla, and Sergio will prove why he is the best in this division.

On the under card, we will see the heavy handed knockout specialist Luis Carlos Abregu (34(28)-1-0) coming of his spectacular knockout of Thomas Dulorme takes on Canadian Antonin Decarie (27(8)-1-0) in a fight that surely will not last long with the vicious and violent style of Abregu for the vacant WBC Sliver welterweight Title. Abregu will look to work his way back into fighting the big names of the 147 pound division and a possible re match with Timothy Bradley.

In a heavyweight WBC title eliminator contest we will see California’s own Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola (35(30)-2-0) take on the Haitian born Bermane Stiverene (22(20)-1-1) Arreola who has looked fantastic since his defeat to Vitali Klitschko and MD to Tomasz Adamek looks to make one more run and the men from above with a win over the un tested Stiverene. It will be a fantastic night of fights starts with the Arreola fight on HBO at 8:30. Enjoy the busy fight weekend fans!
