Marcus Oliveira, a 25-0 Light Heavyweight contender from Wisconsin, is Don King’s Light Heavyweight wild card. With Tavoris Cloud losing to Bernard Hopkins, Don King, Oliveira is Don King’s best chance to challenge Bernard Hopkins to win the International Boxing federation World Light Heavyweight title belt.
Oliveira was ranked as high as tenth in the United States as an amateur heavyweight, losing in the finals of the 2003 National Golden Gloves tournament.
Oliveira will have to wait, as the 48 year old Hopkins will be defending the IBF world title belt he won from 24-0 Tavoris Cloud against 25-1-2 German challenger Karo Murat on July 27, 2013 at Barclay’s Center. Murat holds the IBF Inter-Continental title and last defended it by drawing with Gabriel Campillo in an IBF eliminator in Germany in October 2011.
Oliveira is a rare bird, a Kansas fighter born in Wisconsin. He debuted in Missouri in 2006, knocking out his first six opponents in less than seven rounds. Fighting in such obscure venues as Idaho, Michigan, Kansas, Indiana, South Carolina and Minnesota, and North Dakota, Oliveira won the WBA Fedebol Light Heavyweight title in October 2012 with a first round knockout or Ricky Torrez in Caracas, Venezuela.

With recent wins over 10-1 Chris Eppley in Florida (TKO 4) in 2011 and 21-0 Ryan Coyne (TKO 11) at Treasure Island Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on April 12, 2013, Oliveira is on the rise, and will probably get a world title shot should Hopkins get past Murat. At age 34, Oliveira is no spring chicken in the game of boxing, but he is 14 years younger than Hopkins, and his faster reflexes could give Hopkins trouble in late 2013 if Hopkins-Oliveira materializes.
Besides the draw with Campillo in the IBF eliminator bout, Oliveira has knocked out 20 of his 25 other opponents for an 80 percent knockout ratio. Hopkins has knocked out 32 of 61 opponents for a 52 percent knockout ratio/ Hopkins has fought in 30 world title bouts, though, a figure which does not include his split decision loss to 44-0 Joe Calzaghe in 2008. While Hopkins doe snot have as many professional bouts as the late Archie Moore (219), Hopkins has an unparalleled resume of world championship experience as opposed to the as yet untested Oliveira. Still, the unbeaten but unknown Oliveira is a wild card, as nobody knows much about him.
