When Bobby Czyz Was King

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

New York, NY (March 14, 2013)– When Bobby Czyz was world light heavyweight champion,  it was a different era.

Czyz turned pro in April 1980 and won 20 consecutive bouts before losing a ten rounder to middleweight contender Mustafa Hamsho in November 1982. Czyz then won eight fights in a row while ascending from middleweight to light heavyweight challenger.

In September 1986, Czyz stopped the Carlos Monzon trained 21-0 Slobodan Kacar in the fifth round to win the International Boxing Federation World Light Heavyweight title. Czyz then retained his world title three times with knockouts of David Sears, Willie Edwards and Jim MacDonald. Czyz lost a 122 rounder to WBA World Light Heavyweight champion and future Hall of Famer Virgil Hill, and was then stopped in the eighth round by Charles Williams and lost his IBF title.

After moving up to cruiserweight, Bobby scored wins over Uriah Grant, Andrew Maynard, and Horacio Brandan, then won the World Boxing Association World Cruiserweight title with a 12 round split decision over Robert Daniels, and defended it with 12 round decisions over Bash Ali and Donnie LaLonde. Czyz was sotpped in the fourth round of an IBU World Cruiserweight title bout by David Izeqwire of Nigeria. Czyz then won the vacant WBU World Super Cruiserweight title with a sixth round stoppage of Richard Jackson.

By this point, Bobby had moved up to heavyweight, where he was too heavy to move or win, a mistake. Czyz lost to Evander Holyfield by fifth round stoppage, and lost to Corrie Sanders by kayo in two.

Czyz had a marvelous new career as a television boxing commentator after his fighting career ended, calling fights for Showtime for nearly a decade. Called ‘Chappie’ by some, Czyz is also a member of the MENSA society. His amateur record was 24-2, and his professional career record was 44-8 with 28 kayos. Bobby Czyz was the boy from Wanaque, New   Jersey who made good. While Czyz was a fighting king, he should not have fought about 200 pounds. That was a mistake. Bobby was and still is one of America’s boxing darlings.
