Rodrigo Artilheiro Opens Up About Preparing Brian Stann for his Upcomin Fight.

[Interview w/Pattee Mak – February 14, 2013]  On March 3, 2013 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, UFC on Fuel TV will be broadcasting the main event featuring light heavyweights Wanderlei Silva  (34-12-1) vs. “All American” Brian Stann (12-5-0).  Times/dates will differ in other countries.

I had the privilege to contact one of his trainers, Rodrigo Artilheiro, concerning Stann’s upcoming fight as he prepares him to step into the cage with Silva, so I ran with it.

Pattee Mak: Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions.  I’m sure you are super busy preparing Stann for his upcoming bout.  Tell me how is Stann’s training?

Artilheiro:  I’ve been training more ground with Brian as well as some takedowns.  We have great trainers around him, myself, Raymond Jordan, Manu, John Bardis, Roan Carneiro and Jeff.

Pattee Mak:  You have a large background in the arts.  What area of the arts are you training him in?

Artilheiro:  We’ve been training pretty hard on everything, striking, ground, take downs.  I can tell Brian is ready for every situation the fight goes.  As for myself, I’m trying as much as I can give my fighting and sports experience to Brian.  Since I started Judo at 5 years old I have over 400 competition matches, I got Bronze medal in Pan American wrestling championship, a Gold medal in Brazil Judo Trophy heavyweight championship and many others titles!! Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Amaury Bitetti from Carlson Gracie, Judo black Belt also and used to wrestle all over the world.

Pattee Mak:  How are you preparing him defensively for this fight or do you have a game plan?

Artilheiro:  The strategy is a SECRET. LOL

Pattee Mak:  Hmm I can’t believe you won’t share with me.

Pattee Mak:  What are your thoughts on Silva?

Artilheiro:  Wanderlei is a tough fighter, but I believe a lot on Brian!  In my opinion, he’s stronger and more technical fighter.

Pattee Mak: Besides yourself, who else will be working his corner?

Artilheiro:  At his corner will be myself and John Bardi, a former Olympic wrestler and very good coach cuz he’s been around in this sport for a long time.  Also we have Manu, a 6-time Muay Thai world champion.

Pattee Mak:  How many other times have you worked Stann’s corner?

Artilheiro:  That’s gonna be my first time at Brian’s corner.

Pattee Mak:  Both Stann and Silva are both coming off of a loss, do you think this will affect Stann in any way come the 3rd?

Artilheiro:  No.  It doesn’t matter, he’s in a great shape, very strong mentally and well prepared!

Pattee Mak:  Have you made any adjustments preparing Stann for this fight?

Artilheiro:  Like I said before, we’ve been training on everything and we have an excellent group of professionals around.

Pattee Mak:  Silva has more pro fights than Stann, do you think this will be problem come the 3RD?

Artilheiro:  No, Brian has a lot of experience in the cage he is a former WEC light heavyweight champion and he has a lot of experience as well!

Pattee Mak:  How long have you been training Stann?

Artilheiro:  I’ve been training Brian for about 3, 4 months.

Pattee Mak:  After this fight where would you like to see Stann?

Artilheiro:  I don’t know, we are very focus on that fight, what’s gonna happen afterwards we will decide later!

Pattee Mak:  Stann usually fights at middleweight but this particular fight is light heavy.  Why light heavy?

Artilheiro:  I don’t know what happened, both of them fights on 185 category and the UFC decided to match both on 205, maybe Wanderlei asked to fight Brian on 205 instead in 185.

Pattee Mak:  Tell me about where your training facility is and if someone wanted to join your gym where can they contact you.

Artilheiro:  We train at Warrior Legion Gym in Alpharetta, Georgia besides the pro, we have classes for all kind of students, beginners, advanced, women, kids, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, MMA, kick boxing and a great kid’s program.  You can find us on twitter @warriorlegion and mine is @artilheiromma. Hit us up 🙂  Thanks for the interview!! God bless you!

Pattee Mak:  God bless you also.  It sounds to me like an exciting match up come the 3rd.  I look forward to visiting your gym one of these days.  Should you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to contact me on facebook under Pattee Mak, Twitter @PatteeMak or below.
