DeMarco Wins Decision at Hilton Staten Island

New York, NY (February 1, 2013)–In the main event and bout of the night of a six bout card promoted by Greg Cohen Promotions at the Staten Island Hilton Garden Inn, Cohen’s second annual card, Staten Island lightweight and popular local fighter Nicky ‘Lil Nicky’ DeMarco won a tough hard fought majority six round decision over Travis ‘The Animal’ Thompson in the main event. A packed capacity crowd watched the event, including world champion Paulie ‘Magic Man’ Malignaggi and world ranked heavyweight Travis Kauffman. Flood assistance money was raised for Hurricane Sandy victims of Staten Island through a charity fund raising raffle held during the boxing card.
DeMarco had trouble from the start, losing two rounds to the magnificently trained Thompson, who overcame a losing record, came in with a serious training camp and actually tried to win. Thompson swung and scored with body shots in the first two rounds which forced DeMarco to hang onto Thompson along the ropes in confusion.
However, DeMarco picked up the tempo from round three on, boxing out of Thompson’s range in center ring from the outside scoring with head shots, not leaving Thompson with many opportunities to get inside and counter as he did in the first two rounds. Only occasionally did Thompson score in the later rounds, but Thompson was still ‘in the house’, kept swinging and the two of them went out for the full six rounds, bringing the screaming and cheering crowd to its feet in the bout of the night.
The Staten Island crowd, while Pro-DeMarco, was appreciative of the fact Thompson came to fight and gave a great performance. Many DeMarco fans surprisingly also congratulated Thompson after the bout for giving the crowd its money’s worth. Pennsylvania manager and trainer Marshall Kauffman, who has handled many contenders over the years, did a great job preparing Thompson for this bout.
Thompson showed grit and wild determination coming forward with a solid chin, equaling DeMarco in hard work if not in raw talent. DeMarco proved he has superior technical boxing skills. DeMarco still had to contend with Thompson’s guts and heart. An exciting ring war resulted, making for the bout of the evening.
After the card ended, referee Danny Schiavone, in an interview with Real Combat Media, stated, “It was incredible. Every time I tried to get in and break them, they just started punching again. Tremendous heart (was shown) by both fighters! It made for a great show!” Indeed, Thompson could have earned a majority draw in the bout if he had won one more round on the cards, so scoring was very fair.
DeMarco is now 5-2, 2 knockouts. Thompson, of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, who looks like he got pulled off a Pennsylvania Amish farm, is now 4-9-1, 3 knockouts.
Result: Nicky DeMarco Win Majority 6 Travis Thompson, Lightweights
Scoring: 57-57 draw. 59-55, 58-56 DeMarco. Referee: Danny Schiavone
In an undercard shocker, Cornelius ‘The Body Snatcher’ Whitlock of Hanover, Maryland came from behind to ruin the debut of Shakur ‘Thunder’ Jackson, kayoing him in the third round of a welterweight bout. Whitlock looks something like former welterweight contender Andy Price and found a place for his mean right hand, which Jackson, taller and more muscular, had been slipping until the bout ended. Both fighters wrestled each other to the canvas before the knockdown, which occurred face first in center ring. Whitlock had Jackson in trouble and finished him.
Jose Angel ‘Silver Boy’ Rodriguez, a former IBF North American Middleweight champion, won a hard fought eight round decision over Denis ‘Momma’s Boy’ Douglin. Rodriguez came forward and outboxed Douglin, taking Douglin out of his game plan and reducing Douglin to holding with no counter plan. Douglin, a light middleweight, had no business fighting an experienced fighter like Rodriguez at the higher weight. Rodriguez was busier and worked hard for this win, especially in the last five rounds, letting his hands go when Douglin would not, the key difference.
