Canelo Alvarez vs. Austin Trout is confirmed
By: Anthony L. Gonzalez
Los Angeles, CA (February 15, 2013)– Saul Canelo Alvarez on Twitter has confirmed of a May 4th showdown of Saul Canelo Alvarez vs. Austin Trout as a co-feature bout in Las Vegas, NV. This fight is for the WBA regular championship and the WBC Junior Middleweight titles. Saul Canelo Alvarez, 22, (40-0,1,30Ko’s) is coming off victories against Josesito Lopez and Shane Mosley.
Austin Trout, 27, is undefeated (24-0,14Ko’s) and is coming off an impressive performance against the former World Champion, Miguel Cotto. Trout also defeated Canelo’s brother, Rigoberto Alvarez to win the WBA Championship.
For me it is very difficult to be the co-feature. In fact, I did not want to do it, but I understood that you have to be flexible in order to fight Mayweather, and that is the only reason I agreed to do it. I don’t need to be co-feature to Floyd Mayweather, but we must do our part to make a fight in September,” Canelo said.
These fighters have contrasting styles. Canelo is a very strong body puncher, has nice combinations and is a good counterboxer who stays in the pocket. Trout is the faster of the two fighters. Trout has the considerable advantage in handspeed and footwork. He displayed those skills beautifully against Miguel Cotto. Alvarez does have the power advantage. Both fighters should come to the fight in excellent condition and seem to get stronger as the fight goes on. My pick is Trout will beat Canelo because of his ring intelligence, however we have no idea what type of judges will be at this fight. There is a lot of risk involved if Goldenboy’s most popular fighter loses. A Canelo loss would probably cancel a future lucrative showdown with Floyd Mayweather.
