Tito Serrano’s Career is in Tatters

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

New York, NY (January 27th, 2013)–At age 23, the career of once highly touted light welterweight prospect Raymond ‘Tito’ Serrano is in tatters. After winning 18 consecutive fights from the start of his career in 2007 through 2012, Serrano has his last two outings in the past eight months. First, Serrano was stopped in the fifth round by 15-0-1 Karim Mayfield in May 2012 in a bout for the WBO NABO light welterweight title. Then, Serrano was stopped again on January 25, 2013, in the sixth round by 15-1 Emmanuel Taylor.

The bout between Serrano and Taylor was a crossroads bout for both men but it was Taylor, 22, who lost an eight round split decision to Prenice Brewer in November 2011 but won by six round decision over unbeaten George Sosa in October 2012, who passed the do or die test. Taylor threw short hooks, uppercuts, and accurate counters, and picked apart the wild and missing Serrano in a workmanlike manner, before landing combinations which finished Serrano along the ropes. Serrano, despite being more muscular and taller, got exposed again when placed into the ring with a superior boxer.

Raymond Serrano, a Philadelphia fighter with 100 amateur bouts, had a promising pro career until the fall. It was a bitter way to go for such a respected prospect. Perhaps inactivity, perhaps inadequate preparation, perhaps poor matchmaking as Serrano was not ready for step up bouts, it can be hard to say. In any case, he needs to reevaluate his career, and not take the ‘wrong’ third fight which nails the coffin.
