Lucas Matthysse Blows Away Mike Dallas in First Round
By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent
Pheonix, AR( January 27, 2013)– The man that’s making the biggest statement in this (the 140 pound) division is Lucas Matthysse,” noted Showtime commentator Al Bernstein.
In the Showtime televised main event at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday night, January 26, 2013, World Boxing Council interim light welterweight champion Lucas Martin Matthysse of Argentina made early work of Mike Dallas Jr., knocking him out face first cold at 2:26 of the first round. Dallas was out on his feet, falling after a delayed reaction in which Matthysse missed two follow up punches which could have done worse damage as Dallas was on the down and out. Dallas was fortunately able to eventually leave the ring on his own power.
The WBC has mandated Matthysse will fight the winner of Danny Garcia versus Zab Judah WBC title bout at Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn on February 9, 2013.
Dallas was a late substitute for Hank Lundy, who was unable to fight due to contractual problems. Dallas, who had only four weeks to prepare, was totally unprepared for a fighter on this level. Matthysse, now 33-2, 31 knockouts, Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a brutal hitter, with the highest knockout percentage of any fighter in the history of the 140 pound division with 30 or more professional bouts.
The crowd was fooled into believed the fight card had a bonafide main event.
“I want to fight Danny Garcia or any of the top fighters in the world (and) if it’s Zab Judah (who beats Garcia), yes, sure, I’ll fight Judah,” stated Matthysse after the bout, translated from the Spanish. Matthysse, rated second in the world by BoxRec, wiped the floor with Dallas, 19-3-1, 7 knockouts, Bakersfield, California.
In two undercard bouts which had game, welterweight Jesus Soto Karass scored an upset win in his comeback, winning an easy ten round decision over Turkey’s Selcuk Ayadin, now 23-2. Karass, 27-8-3, 17 knockouts, is a Mexican fighting out of Los Angeles, California. 20-0 Jermell Charlo won the vacant World Boxing Council Continental Americas Light Middleweight title with an eighth round stoppage of Harry Joe Yorgey, now 25-2-2. Yorgey was also knocked out in the third round in November 2009 by Alfredo Angulo in his only other bout against a major contender.
