Carl Froch v Adonis Stevenson fight possible for April

By Callum Meads
Hull, UK (4th January 2013) – Only hours ago it looked as if Carl Froch was gearing up for a unification rematch with Danish fighter Mikkel Kessler. Since then however, a reporter from TVA sports has confirmed that Adonis Stevenson will face The Cobra in April, after Eddie Hearn was unable to come to an agreement with Sauerland boxing. Stevenson’s promoter Yvon Michel is said to be hosting a press conference on Friday to announce the event.
For those who don’t know much about Adonis Stevenson, you’re looking at a fighter with great knockout power and a vicious offense. Stevenson has amassed an 80% KO record in his career so far (19, 16KO), albeit against over matched opponents. The one blemish on his record is a second round TKO loss to Darnell Boone, the guy who gave Andre Ward his first and only knockdown of his career so far. Boone dispatched of Stevenson coming off of 5 straight defeats, it was here that boxing fans began to doubt Stevenson’s ability to perform on the world stage. The Canadian fight surged back from defeat with 5 straight knockout victories; it is this run of form that has seen him become the number one challenger to Carl Froch’s IBF title.
Although Carl Froch could still take on Mikkel Kessler this year if he gets past Stevenson, there is one potential roadblock in the way. Former TKO victim Lucian Bute would still have the option to active his rematch clause after the Stevenson fight, which is certainly a possibility. If this happens, Froch would be obligated to fight Bute as opposed to a unification fight with Kessler. Although we will still be seeing Froch fight top opposition, no rematch with Kessler this year would be a big disappointment to boxing fans all around the world.
