New York, NY (January 24, 2013)– DiBella Entertainment has a fine young middleweight prospect in rapid rise into the middleweight ranks.
Lamar Russ, known by his unusual nickname ‘The Boxing Que’, has disposed of his first 12 consecutive opponents, the most recent victim being Jose Medina, a veteran of 30 pro bouts who lost an eight round decision.
Before the Medina bout, Russ knocked out
Jonathan Cepeda and
Jose Alonzo within five rounds total, fighters with a combined record of 25-0 who he exposed.
A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Russ went to the National Golden Glove quarterfinals twice, in the 165 open division, in 2008 and 2009. A six time North Carolina State champion, Russ was ranked as high as fifth among the United States amateur boxers in his weight class before he turned professional.
A smart fighter of high IQ, Russ holds a college Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Fayetteville State University. A family man, he’s proud father of one year old Kamren Russ. His trainer is Al Smith, best known as the trainer of former WBO Heavyweight champion Ray Mercer of Jacksonville Florida, former USBA Light Heavyweight champion
Anthony Hembrick of Detroit Michigan, and former WBC Light Middleweight champion Keith ‘Brooklyn Assassin’ Mullings.
Russ has already beaten up a number of known name middleweight fighters with winning records on the to the top, including Marcus Upshaw, Elie Augustama, Robert Kamya and Roberto Yong. Kamya was the fifth consecutive knockout victim of Russ from the start of his career, others being Frank Armstrong, Shawn Actier, Brandon Wyatt, and Nain Yates. In October 2012, unbeaten prospect
Jonathan Cepeda of the Dominican Republic failed to make it out of the first round with Russ.
In his most recent outing, Russ validated why Lou DiBella is so talented in finding the right prospects and moving them in the correct direction. Russ demonstrated superior conditioning, foot speed, and superior hand speed against the more experienced veteran Jose Medina of Massachusetts, who still could not be hurt and would not go. Using height and reach advantage to perfection,
Lamar Russ did a superb job preventing troublesome Medina from getting inside for the most part, and making him pay when he tried to get in. Medina, warned for low blows, tried to make the fight dirty, with butt attempts and hitting behind the head on occasion.
Russ stayed busier and out of his opponent’s jab range, winning six rounds on two scorecards at 78-74, and winning the third card 77-75 while getting taken to school somewhat by Medina. Medina had hoped to counter Russ with his guard down, but for the most part no such lucky counter opportunities occurred. A great lesson.
Russ demonstrated superior technical skills which are in the process of evolving to a higher order. Russ works the left jab accurately, moving in and out and side to side while staying well out of his opponent’s range. This leaves opponents in the position of having to get inside and score punches in close, or not score at all. Sometimes when you have a roadblock, you have to fight your way through it. Russ also demonstrated the ability to outfight Medina and score on the inside when necessary.
Lou DiBella should take Russ to the next level, like he did with Irish Seanie Monaghan (a DiBella Entertainkment prospect who currently holds the World Boxing Council Continental Americas Light Heavyweight title and a WBC world ranking). As the World Boxing Council Continental Americas Middleweight title belt is vacant and available, the WBC continental belt would be a good fit for Russ (like Monaghan) in the near future, so Russ can immediately ascend WBC rankings.
Lou DiBella has great experience handling champions in the middleweight division, from Jermaine Taylor to Sergio Gabriel Martinez. Middleweight
Lamar Russ is 26 years old. Sergio Gabriel Martinez, who will turn 38 years old this coming February 21, 2013, will probably be gone in the next 24 to 36 months as he is no Bernard Hopkins. DiBella would be wise to put Russ in a position to rise in the middleweight rankings before Martinez retires, as the middleweight division has DiBella’s name written on it and Russ could be DiBella’s next pot of gold if he is moved correctly
