Khabib Allakhverdiev shocks Joan Guzman in a stunning upset

Beatdown 2012 –BBTCenter Sunrise- FL 11/30/2012

By: Lita B. Kaufman–Ringside

Sunrise, FL– Joan “Little Tyson” Guzman, despite blatant and obvious favoritism by Referee Luis Pabon, got ‘Beatdown’ during his bout against Khabib “The Hawk” Allakhverdiev.  The men battled it out for the vacant WBA World Light Welterweight title.  Defending Allakhverdiev received the win via a Technical Split Decision (not) during a stoppage due to leg injury by Guzman.  Allakhverdiev retains his IBO title and remains undefeated.

Joan Guzman, at 36 years old and the two-time Dominican Champ, is recently recognized for his inability to make weight several times, being suspended for using banned substances and his overall unprofessionalism.  His talent, skills and abilities that he brought to this fight did not substantiate his now 33(20KOs) – 1 – 0 record.  Although he did show heart and determination, he was not a leader in this weight class.

Russian opponent Allakhverdiev is 29 and now 18-0. He is definitely a force to be reckoned with in the future.  His power, speed and ability to take punishment were resilient, as Guzman did get in a few power shots in the earlier rounds of the fight.

Guzman “slipped” several times and, in my opinion, a few of those slips should have been called knockdowns.  Ref Paton did a poor job that evening and called more time outs than I have seen in recent fights.  The hometown crowd, who were partial to the Acquinity Sports house fighter, booed several times as the referee was heavily skewed.  Guzman was bleeding and hurt early on and never recovered.   Sadly, the best part of Guzman’s performance came via his grandiose entrance being ushered into the ring by the live-rapping, DMX.

It will be interesting to see what is in store next for Joan “Little Tyson” Guzman.

Here is a rundown of the undercards:

Umberto Savigne 10(7)-1(1)-0 wins against Dhafir Smith 26(4)-23(4)-7 for the WBA Fedelatin Light Heavyweight title by unanimous decision.

Claudio Marrero14(1)-0-0 was victorious against Mauricio Martinez 36(24)-14(6)-1 for the WBA Fedelatin Featherweight title by TKO in the 4th round.

Isiah Thomas 11(6)-0-0 dominated Richard Hall 30(28)-11(7)-0 for the vacant WBA Fedelatin Cruiserweight by unanimous decision.

Juan Carlos Payano 12(7)-0-0 won the 10 Round Bantamweight bout featuring Jose Luis Araiza 29(20)-7(5)-1 by TKO for the WBA Fedelatin Bantamweight title championship.

Dominique Dolton 13(7)-0-0 looked like the rising star and a fighter to watch last evening. He dominated Richard Gutierrez 26(16)-11(3)-1 in power and speed and won the vacant WBA Fedelatin Middleweight title. Keep an eye out forDolton!

Ed Parades 32(21)-3(1)-1 gave a great fight against Javier Castro 27(22)-6(1)-0 and won by unanimous decision.

Music Report

Beatdown 2012 was a boxing marathon; a bit long and well planned, however the timing was off.  The music portion of the evening did not begin until after 11, yet scheduled to begin at 9pm. There was a rapper from Brooklyn whose name was not distinguishable who got boo’d through 2 songs, if you would call them that.  He was followed by Travis Porter, a relative newcomer that the crowd seemed to love.  Fat Joe belted out some hits follow by Fabolous. The time between sets was tedious as each DJ needed to set up for his posse.  By the time Waka Flocka came to the stage, it was close to 1:30 am. I was disappointed to miss the performances by DMX but was glad to hear him during the Guzman ring walk. Peace to Flo Rida whose CD I listened to on the way home  North.

Kudos to Acquinity Sports. Bottom line is they produced a class act production. The Fight/Music combination was a stellar idea. With slight tweaks consisting of better promotion and tighter timing, Beatdown has the makings of a not-to-be-missed event.

A special Thank you to Henry Rivalta, Dina Stanley and Carmen Sanchez.
