Hector Camacho Updates
San Juan, Puerto Rico — Hector “Macho” Camacho was on life support on Wednesday after he was shot in the face and neck and doctors treating the three-time world boxing .
Camacho, was a passenger in a car driven by his lifelong friend, Alberto Yamil Mojica. They were sitting in the parked car outside a bar when someone opened fire, killing the driver. Camacho was shot in the jaw by a bullet that fractured two vertebrae and lodged in his shoulder, doctors said. The shooting was believed to be drug related after 9 bags of cocaine was found in the car.
Camacho, 50, was gravely injured in a drive-by shooting in Puerto Rico on Tuesday night. Dr. Ernesto Torres said Camacho suffered a heart attack early Wednesday, worsening his condition, and at one point his heart had stopped.
Camacho was just taken off the respirator at the hospital at the request of his Mother on Saturday. The family was having a difficult time figuring out the right time to take him off the respirator. They were also deciding where to donate the organs.
“I lost my son three days ago. He’s alive only because of a machine,” Maria Matias said. “My son is not alive. My son is only alive for the people who love him,”.
Camacho will be remembered for colorful personality and his legendary boxing career. He fought at a pro for 28 years and was a former world champion. Camacho had a record of (79-5,3) He also had the fastest hands during his generation and is one of the best boxers to ever come out of Puerto Rico. He will be missed by many.
The family will have the funeral in New York.
