Rumors: The Demise of Strikeforce!!!

By: Sensei Phillip Palmejar

Recently, several media outlets have indicated that the secondary premier brand name of Mixed Martial Arts in the United States will be not only cancelling their November 3rd event, but they will also be closing their doors permanently.

This news comes off of the heels of Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold (10-1) injuring his wrist and pulling out of his title fight with Lorenz Larkin (13-0).  The same card already took a strong hit earlier last month when the marquee match up of undefeated heavyweight prospect Daniel Cormier and Frank Mir was also scrapped due to Mir’s injury.

Chris Taylor of BJPENN.com wrote: “Sources close to BJPENN.com informed us just moments ago that Strikeforce operations are set to cease and that the promotion is going out of business.”

Another large media outlet, AXS TV’s Inside MMA, had this to say recently:  “‘Inside MMA’ has heard from multiple sources that the relationship between Strikeforce and Showtime may be coming to an end. We are being told that the November 3rd event is in serious jeopardy, and there’s a strong possibility that Showtime will no longer broadcast Strikeforce events. This could very possibly signify the end of the Strikeforce brand. Strikeforce was purchased by Zuffa in March of 2011. We have to receive any word from either Showtime or Strikeforce as this development continues.”

So what do you think RCM’ers?  Is this a good thing or a bad thing for professional American MMA?  Will we finally get to see Melendez fight the upper tier of the UFC’s lightweight division?  Will Cormier get to coach TUF opposite Jon Jones which he so adimantly has been hinting at?  Can Rockhold put a dent in the super-stacked Middleweight division in the UFC?  Only time will tell.
