John Hathaway vs John Maguire

First round, ring control by Hathaway, no offense from Maguire accept for a single counter left.  Non stop offense by Hathaway, nothing explosive but peppering Maguire with the straight right and high right kick.  Maguire, the lefty, was circling to the wrong side, stepping to his left and into the power of Hathaway the entire round. RCM score 10-9 Hathaway

Second round was the same as the first, no real offense put together by Maguire who seemed happy to simply stay on the tip of Hathaway’s vastly superior reach and speed.  RCM score 10-9 Hathaway

Third round was more competitive with Maguire landing a takedown with a minute left in the match.  However, he was unable to mount any effective combinations from the top and left the match up to the judges sitting in Hathaway’s guard.  RCM score 10-9 Hathaway

Unanimous Decision for Hathaway

Matt Wiman vs Paul Sass

Sass starts with an immediate takedown and shoves Wiman into the cage.  Good ground and pound from Sass, he drops back for an ankle lock but loses top position.  He transfers to an oma plata but loses that also.  Wiman stay on top until Sass sweeps back to top position.  Wiman plays a descent defensive guard, attacking the guillotine often.  He sets up a triangle after Sass fails another ankle lock but Sass is out.  Wiman eats some hard top shots but attacks for an armbar, after a fight and sass dropping knees from the top, Wiman finishes the armbar and taps Paul Sass at his own game.  Awesome ground work on behalf of both fighters.

Gunnar Nelson vs Damarques Johnson

Gunnar with the lifted double leg off of the cage, he then methodically passed to full mount 2 minutes in.    He then transitions to the back half way through the round.  His body triangle adds pressure to Johnson’s breathing.  After he loosens him up with some ground and pound from the top of the back, Gunnar gets the first round RNC on Damarques Johnson.  Big win for Gunnar , who remains undefeated in his octagon debut.

Brad Pickett vs Yves Jabouin

The fight starts with a great pace as both fighters stand in the pocket throwing combinations.  Pickett has the heavier hands with his huge left hook and straight right, while Jabouin has the more effective legs with smashing head kicks, spinning back kicks and knees.  Back and forth the fighters bang each other with damaging blows, none seeming to get the advantage.  Then out of nowhere, Pickett smashes Jabouin with a right uppercut that puts him to sleep.  Brad follows up with some un-needed downward strikes to the face before the referee runs in to put a stop to the contest.

Brad Pickett by KO

Amir Sadollah vs Dan Hardy

At the bell, Amir takes center octagon and controls position through the majority of the round.  He is clearly the busier of the fighters and puts together punches in bunches and inside and outside leg kicks.  Once the middle of the round hits, Hardy starts to find his rhythm and begins to open up.  His left hook is the deciding factor to the shift in momentum.  Near the final minutes, the fighters clinch and work inside with knees and punches against the cage.  At the very end of the round, both fighters look for the takedown, as they evenly hit the mat, the bell sounds.  RCM 10-9 Amir

Dan Hardy comes out quick and puts together an aggressive opening combination.  He is moving faster and with more of a sense of urgency than the first round.  He throws some powerful kicks and punches before dropping levels and getting a clean double leg on Amir.  He is able to wall walk the cage to his feet and Amir restarts the stand-up battle after a brief clinch.  After some evenly matched exchanges, Hardy again changes levels and sticks the double leg takedown.  No real effective ground and pound is put together by Hardy and the round ends with Sadollah playing guard and Hardy punching and elbowing downward.  RCM 10-9 Hardy

At the start of the third, neither man looks worse for wear and they come with precision strikes, both of them landing.  Hardy begins to take the momentum and lands the more effective strikes.  Sodallah is showing the wear on his face as Hardy lands another double leg takedown.  Pushing Amir vertical against the cage, Dan lands some very good ground  and pound.  Amir tries to put together an angle for some submissions but they are shrugged off by Hardy with aggressive and strong top strikes.  With less than a minute remaining, Hardy turns up heat with the strikes just as Amir is able to escape to his feet.  A few more seconds of swinging to the fences and the fight ends.  10-9 Hardy

Dan Hardy by Unanimous Decision

Stefan Struve (24-5) vs Stipe Miocic (9-0)

Miocic is being the aggressor and is able to close the distance relatively easily.  He puts together punching combinations to the body and head.  Struve starts to counter with both low and high kicks that are mostly checked by Stipe.  Miocic grabs Stefan during an attempted body knee and gets the easy takedown.  Struve entangles his leg and Miocic pulls away quickly and forces the restand.  Descent back and forth combination from both fighters with neither man taking the clear advantage.  As the bell sounds, Stipe is able to rattle off a one two combination.  RCM 10-9 Miocic

They meet at center octagon to start the second round.  Less than a minute in, Miocic takes a groin kick from Struve who was attempting a left inside leg kick.  After the restart, Miocic comes in more aggressive with punching combinations.  Struve starts to pump the jab and begins to stalk Miocic with punches.  The momentum is swinging and Miocic is on the run, Struve has him clearly hurt and dazed.  Just past the midway point and Miocic gets Struve backing up against the cage with a counter right.  Struve comes back with a right uppercut and some straight right hands that land.  Miocic has an awesome chin.  He gets hit with several more right hands and looks to be in real trouble.  Struve blasts away with the right hand smashing Miocic over and over, he is literally out on his feet as Herb Dean steps in to stop the match.

Stefan Struve by KO
