Hamburg, Germany–

Alexander Povetkin vs. Hasim Rahman (Recap)

By: Travis Kennedy

Undefeated heavyweight Alexander Povetkin retained his WBA heavyweight title with a dominating second-round knockout of Hasim Rahman on Saturday.

From the opening bell it seemed evident that Alexander Povetkin was the sharper fighter. Rahman appeared a step slower than he has been in recent memory. Both boxers showed aggression early, but it was Povetkin who inflicted the most damage and controlled the round. Povetkin stunned Rahman with a few shots and took the round easily.

Rahman’s legs seemed heavy and he appeared sluggish throughout the fight. As soon as the second round started you could tell Povetkin started to really feel comfortable. Povetkin had Rahman pinned against the ropes and landed a barrage of punches. At one point, Rahman had to use his right arm to hold himself up against the ropes. Povetkin took full advantage of Rahman’s unsteady legs and unleashed punches from all angles in which Rahman could not defend. Referee Gustavo Padilla had seen enough and waved off the bout 1 minute and 36 seconds into the second round. At 39 years old it may be time for Rahman to call it a career and ride off into the sunset. Rahman was once a feared warrior in a strong heavyweight division, but after 18 years as a professional that time has come and gone.

Rahman dropped to 50-8-2 (41 KO’s), while Povetkin moves to 25-0 (17 KO’s). Povetkin has now defended his WBA title three times, and now becomes the mandatory challenger for heavyweight world champion Wladimir Klitschko. This fight should happen sometime in 2013. Povetkin was close to facing Klitschko a few times in the past but the fights never materialized. With Povetkin ranked third behind the Klitschko brothers on most pound for pound lists, this is sure to be a very popular fight for a struggling heavyweight division.
