Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez Recap

By: Anthony L. Gonzalez

12th ROUND

Las Vegas, Nevada – Tonight at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada we witnessed a classic fight. We witnessed one of the best 12th rounds in championship boxing history. Tonight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32KOs) earned the respect of doubters. Doubters can no longer say he is living in the shadow of his father, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr.

The scores were 118-109, 118-109 and 117-110 for Martinez. Martinez won the WBC title tonight.

But for most of the fight, Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 29KOs) put on a boxing lesson. He was showing Chavez Jr. that he was the superior boxer. Martinez Jr. was landing his right jab followed by a straight left to the body all night. For eleven rounds, Martinez’s superior footwork prevented Chavez Jr. from planting his feet to land any decent shots. He also stayed away from the ropes and put Chavez Jr. through a lot of punishment. Freddie Roach who trains Chavez Jr., even stated during the fight, that he was thinking about stopping the fight. Martinez used distance and was effectively counter punched Chavez Jr. all night.

The 12th round was historic. Both fighters showed they are Latino warriors. From the start of the round, Sergio seemed too confident and had his arms raised. Sergio started to box well to begin the round. Chavez Jr. closed him down and trapped him up against the ropes and landed devastating left hooks. Martinez was dropped and the entire Las Vegas crowd was in shock with close to one minute remaining. Martinez showed heart and rose up. Then Martinez was very hurt at that point. Martinez slipped again and Chavez Jr. was unable to finish Martinez off as the continue to fight toe to toe. Martinez was able to survive the round. But both fighters showed their courage during the final round.

I am pretty confident that there will be an immediate rematch. Bob Arum the president of Top Rank Promotions mentioned in the post press conference that he wanted the rematch in Dallas Cowboy Stadium which can seat close to 100,000 spectators. Sergio Martinez said he would like the rematch to be in Argentina. The details of the rematch remain up in the air.

My question is should Chavez Jr. have to weigh in the night of the fight in a rematch ? He reportedly did not weigh in tonight and that definitely could have been an advantage for Julio.
