Last night we saw the last bout of arguably the two most famous women in boxing. Christy Martin (49-7-3) fought Mia St. John (46-11-2) in a rematch to their 2002 bout. On the line was the WBC Light-Middleweight crown at the Table Mountain Casino in California. This fight was not televised.
The outcome this time however came in St. John’s favour; she won the bout by a ten round UD and claim the belt as her own. This time she appeared to edge the majority of the rounds and get the better of Martin by landing the most punches and making it clear to the judges it was her fight. The judges came back with scores of 96-94 (twice) and 97-93.
The two announced their retirements in the immediate aftermath of the bout as promised. Very few of us will doubt the integrity of these retirements and one is quite certain these two have officially hung up their gloves for good.
To conclude, both have had their last hurrahs and will now pursue their goals in other fields. It is always good to see fighters end their careers on good terms and seemingly without any form of resentment. I’m sure the fighters will not veer too far away from the sport in their retirement however as after all, this is the sport they have gave much of their lives to and in such conditions it cannot be too simple to detach oneself from completely.
