UFC FX 4 Recap Gray Maynard vs. Clay Guida

In the 5 round main event tonight Clay “The Carpenter” Guida squared off against Gray “The Bully” Maynard in a fast paced, though somewhat action lacking contest. Early on it was evident that Guida’s awkward and continuous footwork/head movement combination was causing a lot of confusion & frustration for Maynard. Guida’s stiff jab was also finding it’s mark frequently as well, which added to the riddle that Maynard was having problems solving.
Somewhere around the middle of the 3rd round, Maynard started to get some of the unorthodox rhythm of Guida’s down along with having some success in locking up a Thai clinch a few times & landing some short knees.
In the 4th, Gray was able to repeat some of the success in doing some work out of the clinch as well as sinking in a tight guilllotine choke, though Guida showed a lot of heart in popping out of.
Finally, in the 5th, referee Dan Miragliotta gave Guida a warning for excessive fleeing, stemming from Guida basically running away from a punch combo attempt from Maynard. In the end, the judges apparently vie’d in favor of the fighter who did the most meaningful damage instead of the busier fighter in awarding Maynard the split-decision victory.
