UFC on FX 3: Johnson vs. McCall Recap

By Head MMA writer: Mike Alexander

They squared off just three months ago to a highly contested draw. Now we can say without a doubt, Mighty Mouse is our second contender to the vacant UFC flyweight title.

In a match that looked eerily similar to their last bought, both Demetrious Johnson and Ian “Uncle Creepy” McCall fought to a decision. Mighty Mouse controlled the first round with his speed, fantastic footwork, and strong wrestling. Heading into the second round, McCall rushed straight through Johnson for a takedown, but Johnson quickly got the fight back standing. McCall found his range and controlled the second round with crisp striking. In the third round, Johnson turned on the intensity and was able to take McCall down and pepper him with leg kicks and short punches. The fight ended with a unanimous decision as two judges scored the fight 29-27 with the other judge giving a 30-27 score to Johnson. This was Uncle Creepy’s first loss at flyweight, but more importantly, this fight sets up a match between Mighty Mouse and Joseph Benavidez for the newly created flyweight title.

Also on the card, Erick Silva continued his welterweight dominance with a first round RNC over Charlie Brenneman. With dynamic striking and a very solid jiu-jitsu game, he is going to be a tough contender in the next few years. The rest of the fights went as follows:
