Pacquaio vs Bradley at the MGM

By: Adam Millican

This Saturday night at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, NV Manny Pacquaio (54-3-2 38 KOs) will meet Timothy Bradley (28-0 12KOs) to defend his WBO welterweight title.

Manny Pacquaio, who is #1 or #2 on most boxing pound for pound lists, is on a fifteen fight win streak but many are questioning his drive and dedication coming off his controversial decision win against Juan Manuel Marquez.  Although Manny won many felt that Marquez fought the better, smarter, fight and should have gotten the nod.  There were questions leading up to the fight as to whether outside the ring distractions such as marital problems or his political career were hurting his focus.  Even trainer and mentor Freddy Roach has since admitted that it wasn’t Pacquaio’s best performance.  Be that as it may, Pacquaio is still a strong favorite in this bout and his speed, footwork, and lightning fast combination punching would give any fighter problems.

Timothy Bradley is one of the best young American fighters and boasts an undefeated record.  His significant wins have come against Junior Witter and Devon Alexander.  Although his knockout percentage is not sky high, he has an aggressive, come forward style of fighting and likes to take the fight to his opponent.  Sometimes this has led to a clash of heads in his fights, which is something that may play a factor in this bout.  A strict vegan during his training camps, Bradley also possesses one of the most impressive physiques in the sport of boxing.  If muscles could win fights we’d know the outcome already, but only in the ring will the fight be decided.

With the questions surrounding the Marquez fight Pacquaio has something to prove to the fans and to himself.  In fact Freddy Roach has already talked about retirement for Manny should he lose.  For Bradley a win here would shoot him straight to the top of the fight game.  The younger Bradley seems very confident going into the fight.  At the final press conference he brought a supersize poster of a ticket to Pacquaio vs Bradley 2, so confident is he of a win and thus a resulting rematch.  Bradley will look to use his youth, conditioning, and a high punch output to outwork Pacquaio.  He’s also much more comfortable on the inside than Manny, and may try to smother him up close.  Overall his best chance is to put rounds in the bank early and then cruise to a decision.  On the other hand, Bradley’s willingness to engage head to head and slug it out may work against him.  Pacquaio has the superior handspeed and can put his punches together better.  Manny also has much more experience in big fights and is more proven at 147lbs.  He likely hits much harder than anyone Bradley has ever faced.  If Manny really is on the downside of his career and isn’t 100% prepared for this fight then Bradley has a chance to pull an upset.  Otherwise, expect Manny’s firepower to overwhelm Bradley in the mid to late rounds.
