BRADLEY BECOMES THE ALPHA MALE AS HE TOPPLES ‘PAC-MAN’

‘Controversial,’ ‘farcical,’ ‘a new low for boxing,’ ‘robbed,’ are just several of the superlatives that were used and to what not only the boxing but also the sporting world as a whole woke up to on the morning of Sunday 10th June 2012. All of which emanated from the success of Timothy Bradley Jnr’s very much unexpected split decision points victory over Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, USA.
The victory for Bradley extended his own undefeated fight record to (29(12)-0-(1NC) and in doing so would see him claim the WBO World Welterweight title as well as inflicting a fourth defeat onto Pacquiao , now boasting a (54(38)-4(2)-2) record.
Victory would be that much a surprise that even he stated prior to the decision being announced that “I tried hard but couldn’t beat the guy.”
The outcome though would be so very different and officials would be seen to score the bout, Pacquiao’s score first; 115-113, 113-115, 113-115 even though over scorecards around the globe weighed heavily in the ousted champions favour. Victory for Bradley though moved him closer to the peak of the Welterweight division.
The question emerging now though is who would be next for Timothy ‘Desert Storm’ Bradley Jr? A fighter whom is now not only the WBO World Welterweight champion, but also the WBC Light Welterweight champion in recess and, with seemingly more options now available to him. Of those options there will no doubt be a re-match with the ousted Pacquiao later in the year.
With the defeat of Pacquiao the first challenger to throw himself into the mix in the immediate aftermath of the contest was to be that of Brit, Amir Khan. The Welterweight king, whom himself courted controversy recently with Lamont Peterson, was straight onto his Twitter account (@AmirKingKhan) saying that
“If Bradley wants it I’m ready, he turned me down twice. After I beat Garcia I will offer Bradley the fight for the third time.”
“What a joke. We had Manny winning by five rounds. Bradley, how about you take the fight with me in December after I clean up the 140lbs weight.”
“I will 100% beat Bradley. Let’s do it. What do you all think? Come December #khanbradley.”
Also, with the WBC Welterweight champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr presently incarcerated, and no doubt watching on with vested interest, there are, as mentioned, numerous options available to Bradley. Between that of the Welterweight and Light Welterweight divisions there would be at least eight potential fights with that of Ortiz, Berto and Brook (Welterweights) and Khan, Marquez, Garcia, Rios and Alvarado (Light Welterweights) all vying. There is also even the potential for a Bradley-Peterson II, the first coming back in December 2009 when Bradley won again with a UD 12 for the WBC Light Welterweight crown.
