Huck settles for a draw in an action packed fight
By: Eliud Vazquez
Messehalle, Erfurt, Thüringen, Germany – Marko Huck(34-2-1, 25 KOs) battled Nigeria’s Ola Afolabi(19-2-4, 9 KOs) to a twelve round majority draw and retained his WBO cruiserweight title. It was an exciting back and forth fight that saw both men trading heavy leather. The bout was a rematch from 2009 in which Huck won by a close but unanimous decision. The early rounds belonged to Afolabi by out thinking Huck in the ring. Huck began to pick up steam in the middle rounds and nearly stopped the Nigerian in the ninth round round. In between those rounds Huck suffered a cut due to a clash of heads in round seven. The championship rounds were on even terms and both men traded telling blows in the final round. The scores were read 114-114, 115-113 Huck, and 114-114.
Robert Stieglitz(42-2, 23 KOs) outclassed Nader Hamdan(43-10-1, 18 KOs) to retain his WBO super middleweight championship by a twelve round unanimous decision. Hamdan was a late sub when George Groves pulled out of the fight. A scheduled fight with Mikkel Kessler was also scratched. Hamdan provided a stern test for Stieglitz but in the end, Hamdan was battered and bruised by heavy punches from the Russian. The score were 120-108, 117-111, and 117-111.
