Alvarez/Kirkland possibly on Sept. 15

WBC super welterweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez(40-0-1, 29 KOs) could be facing WBC #2 super welterweight contender James Kirkland(31-1, 27 KOs) on September 15 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Canelo is fresh off his impressive victory over Shane Mosley in the undercard of the Mayweather/Cotto fight this past Saturday. If the bout is a go, it will be Canelo’s first pay-per-view headliner.
Kirkland’s last time in the ring was less than spectacular that concluded with a controversial ending against Carlos Molina. Kirkland was getting out boxed mostly throughout the fight until he knockdown Molina in the tenth round. A confusion in Molina’s corner at the near end of the round led to a disqualification defeat in favor of Kirkland. Team Molina are still trying to get the DQ lost overturned to a No-Contest when they appealed the referees verdict. Meanwhile Kirkland is recovering from a successful shoulder surgery. Team Kirkland blames the bum shoulder for his unimpressive showing against Molina.
