DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley ready for McCloskey at the Irish Rumble

By UK Boxing Writer Peter Mann

Kings Hall in Belfast, Northern Ireland will not only be the venue for the Irish Middleweights Prizefighter on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports. It will also see a Light Welterweight bout between Derry’s Paul McCloskey, with q 23(12)-1 fight record, and the last minute replacement in DeMarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley.

Corley is in the bout as the last minute replacement for Mexican Julio Diaz after the Central American fighter withdrew amidst his concerns regarding the 140 pounds weight limit imposed on the bout. And Corley was more than happy to be named as the replacement and he told Real Combat Media “I am very happy to be named as Diaz’s replacement for this fight and I am not only focussed but I am ready for it as well.”

Corley enters the McCloskey bout with a fight record of his own which reads 38(12)-1-19(4) having made his professional debut back in 1996. A vastly experienced southpaw, Corley has travelled around the globe and is no stranger to fighting in a different country. The trip toNorthern Ireland, his first visit, will see a ninth country added to the globe-trotting having also fought in that ofRussia,China,NicaraguaandPuerto Rico, amongst others.

As a former WBO Light Welterweight champion himself though between 2001 and 2003 ‘Chop Chop’ Corley is looking to put himself back into the title picture with this bout against McCloskey as being a stepping stone for that.

He continued by stating “it will be a great experience for Paul (McCloskey) to get into the ring with me, as well as a bad experience. Nothing personal though it’s just business as I want to become a champion again.”

McCloskey though has ambitions of his own though and the next step for the victor between the two fighters could well be a shot at the WBC Light Welterweight championship which is presently held by Danny Garcia. For McCloskey this provides an interesting scenario as Garcia is due to face the Nigerian-born Briton, Ajose Olusegun. Should the challenge of Olusegun be a successful one then it could bring to light the prospect of a UK-Ireland title fight could be on the cards.

McCloskey though must first get past the challenge of Corley first and the American concluded in saying “I think Paul will do very well but he is fighting a fighter that has everything on the line for this fight and I hope he is to be properly prepared for me, no excuses.”
