TYSON FURY WINS IRISH HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE WITH IMPRESSIVE KNOCKOUT

Just minutes ago, undefeated rising heavyweight star Tyson Fury (now 18-0, 13 KO’s) stopped Martin Rogan (now 14-3, 7 KO’s) in the fifth round to win the vacant Irish heavyweight title at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Fury surprised many by fighting as a southpaw for the first time in his career and uncharacteristically fighting tentatively for the first two rounds.

Rogan, 40, impressed during the opening two rounds by storming out fast and aggressively, it was clear he was trying to land the overhand rights that Fury in the past has shown big weaknesses towards. Things soon changed in the third round as Fury began picking his shots wisely and sent Rogan stumbling to the canvas with a hard left hand to the head. This knocked the aggression right out of Rogan, as he became wary of Fury’s power.

In the 4th round, Fury controlled the action with quicker shots and improved footwork. Fury was now fighting with the energy and spirit that was absent in the first two rounds. Although this round was competitive, Fury edged Rogan out by picking and landing the harder shots, controlling his foe.

The fifth was like the fourth round, with Fury starting to dominate the fight before pummeling Rogan’s mid section with a perfectly timed left body shot that sent him down to the canvas gasping for air. Rogan just managed to beat the count but his trainer, Checa intervened to stop the contest.

Just practicing a few things in there, I’m a world class heavyweight and I’m trying new things,” said 23-year-old Fury of his change of style in the fight when asked by Channel 5.

“It felt like home here….and I hope to bring big title fights to Ireland,” said Fury who was eligible to fight for the Irish title as both his parents are from the country.

Tyson Fury is next expected to be fighting on the 30th of June, live on Channel 5 again.

On the undercard, Chris Eubank Jr. racked up his third professional victory and second stoppage win against a fellow unbeaten prospect in Paul Allison (his record now falls to 5-1-1, 1 KO).  Allison was game and never stopped coming forward, but Eubank Jnr’s speed and combinations proved too much for him & it was stopped in the fourth round.

Chris Eubank will next be in the ring on the 12th of May, live on Channel 5
