Felix Sturm vs. Sebastian Zbik
By UK Boxing Writer Jon Campbell
Tonight in Germany 3-time World Middleweight titleholder Felix Sturm defends his WBA belt against fellow countryman Sebastian Zbik. He has held this title since he won the rematch against Spaniard Javier Castillejo in 2007. Although it can be said that Sturm has had greater experience amongst elite-level fighters, Zbik promises to be one of his toughest opponents to date. This is due to his boxing skills and successful amateur background. One thing which excites me but may not others is we have two great tacticians in the sport who are not particular big punchers, which suggests that this fight will most likely be a 12-round chess match.
Something which comes to mind when looking at this fight is the common complaint against sturm that he receives special treatment with regards to scorecards as he always defends his title in his homeland. for example his last two fights consisting of a win against Matthew Macklin and a draw against Martin Murray, both proving to provide contraversy. This fight in an interesting one as he competes against another German who has a possibility of beating him and it would be an interesting to see how the three judges at ringside will score the fight.
Should this fight be scored fairly, I would say that Zbik’s boxing ability will shine through against a fighter like sturm. He has already demonstrated great talent throughout his career but was suprisingly notable in his only loss against Julio Cesar Chavez JR., beating him quite decisively in the early rounds only to slow down and lose a majority decision as a result of Chavez’s sustained body attack. Sturm does not strike me as a fighter who is capable of posing such problems, although his game plan will certainly aim to take Zbik away from his very polished style. One thing is for certain is that leading up to this bout it is one which is close and difficult and to pick a winner in.
