If life is all about the new replacing the old, the aged transferring their wisdom to the youth, then what happens when those whose better years have passed simply refuse to relinquish the torch?
Listening to Chad Dawson, it’s clear that he sees himself as a sort of champion for the young guns, someone who gladly takes on the burden of removing a 47-year-old roadblock from the sport.
“I want to get Bernard Hopkins out of the sport so I can make room for other young fighters coming up,” says the 29-year-old Dawson.
‘We don’t need Bernard Hopkins in boxing anymore. I mean, he’s going into the Hall of Fame. He’s done everything there is to do in boxing. What more does he want?”
One cannot help but feel a measure of sympathy for Chad. Having publicly chased a fight with Hopkins for a number of years, he finally got his wish, only for the October 15 contest to end prematurely in the second round when Hopkins sustained an injury to his left shoulder. The fight would eventually be ruled a ‘No Contest’ by the California State Athletic Commission.
However, Team Dawson has always suspected that Hopkins’ injury was merely theatrics – a means for him to escape the fight. As the conversation turns to that infamous night, Dawson reflects on the moment he lost the chance to dethrone the champion. Continue Reading…
