UFC on Fuel TV: Sanchez vs. Ellenberger Recap
By: MMA Writer Mike Alexander
I feel bad for all fight fans who were unable to watch the Fuel TV card, as the UFC, once again, put on another amazing free card. In a 29-28 UD victory, Jake Ellenberger has put his name firmly at the top of the list of fighters vying for the coveted #1 Contender status.
Ellenberger dominated the first two rounds of his fight with Diego Sanchez, using his superior striking and overpowering wrestling to outwork Sanchez. Going into the third round though, we got to see the heart of Sanchez go into action. While looking obviously tired, he started to find his shots and was tagging Ellenberger with good strikes. Even though he put on a great show, it wasn’t enough to earn the win. With this Fight of the Night win, Ellenberger (27-5) is now on a six fight win streak. Hopefully Carlos Condit accepts the rematch and we can truly know who is the best person to take on Georges St. Pierre.
The action packed night also saw Stefan Struve give Dave Herman his first loss in the UFC. Struve was able to use his reach to pick apart Herman and went to town with some good ground n’ pound to seal the deal in the 2nd round.
Stipe Miocic won his first KO of the Night award with some spectacular punches in a strong 1st round performance over Philip De Fries. Ivan Menjivar, being the only fighter to win by submission, took home the Submission of the Night award in a very exciting fight that saw him submit John Albert with a Rear Naked Choke.
Overall, this card proved to be a great night of fights, if you can stand the ten minute set of commercials in between fights. But you can’t really knock commercials when you get to watch exciting up and comers slug it out. As always, keep checking up on Real Combat Media for all of your MMA and Boxing cravings, and be on the look out for a preview article over the UFC Japan card.
