UFC: 143 Condit vs. Diaz Preview

By: Tommy Dangerously

One day closer as Saturday, February 4th approaches and UFC: 143 Condit vs. Diaz at the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Originally slated to be Diaz vs. St’ Pierre but through a series of unfortunate setbacks and injuries, Condit vs. Diaz was born. Although it isn’t the fight the MMA community was fuming at the mouth over in (GSP vs. Diaz) it has captured a good percentage headlines lately. Only Condit vs. Diaz makes for a very fascinating bout. Both have great potential and are more than worthy of a shot in the spotlight with the champ, George St’ Pierre who is currently rehabbing his surgically repaired knee.

I believe the most circulated version though is that it was always supposed to be Nick Diaz and this is the customary soup before the main course. No knock against Condit, who is well respected in the UFC with one fight of the night and two cringe worthy KO’s of the night underneath his belt, respectively.
The two combatants, both of Mexican Descent and of two totally different walks of life; Carlos Condit, 27 years old (27-5), is the son of New Mexico chief of staff for former governor, Bill Richardson. While Nick Diaz, 28 years old (27-7-1), of Stockton, CA, just south of Sacramento, amid farmland who grew up without his biological father. You could dub this fight friend or foe, good versus evil, the humble husband versus the problem child, Jackson submission versus Gracie jiu-jitsu.

The bottom line is, this fight is a reality and happening. There’s nobody more anxious of the outcome than current welterweight world champion, and ranked number one pound for pound fighter, Georges St’ Pierre. Up until this point we have never seen the cool, calm, collected, Quebec, Canada native, appear to be so unraveled. Speaking of “dark places” and voicing his distaste for Nick Diaz publicly, and as much as he and Carlos Condit are friends, and good friends at that via Greg Jackson’s gym, he wants everyone to know, and I quote, “I wanna put my hands on him myself”.

Honestly, let’s face it…Serving up humble pie is what GSP does better than any MMA star to date. Ask Josh Koschek, I’m sure he can vouch for that. The fact that old George is causing such a fuss, or how the French say, “Provoquant une histoire” makes this mildly comical and great for headlines. Plus, help stir the proverbial plot in anticipation for UFC 143. I will admit the most silent character in this whole extravaganza is UFC President, Dana White. White, who usually is as loud as P.T. Barnum, with a whip and megaphone, did a superb job of mediating this whole affair. But, no matter what happens, Dana and George, will be cage side, eager and ready for the outcome. So stay tuned, MMAniacs to realcombatmedia.com. This is Tommy Dangerously…signing off.
