SERGIO MARTINEZ DROPS THE WBC & HBO

BY: BOXING WRITER FRANK RIVERA

Dec 29,2011

The current Ring Magazine Middleweight Champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez held a press conference today in Buenos Aires, Argentina to discuss his frustration with the WBC, its President Jose Sulaiman’s and HBO. Martinez is unhappy and angered with the WBC President Jose Sulaiman’s decision to allow Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight his mandatory challenger, Marcos Antonio Rubio on February 4th, 2012 for the WBC Middleweight Title. Sulaiman told Martinez that he would get a chance to fight Chavez Jr. sometime in March 2012 for the WBC Middleweight Title, but went back on his words. Sergio Martinez had this to say to the media:

“I am not going to defend the WBC Diamond Belt anymore. The only title I am going to defend from now on will be the one I won after defeating Kelly Pavlik, which is The Ring Magazine Title. I won’t ever defend the WBC again. Until the WBC makes the fight they ordered they said at the convention but they will not honor their own agreement.” Martinez continues on to talk about Arum, Roach and Chavez Jr. “I hate how much of a coward Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is displaying, as well as his trainer Freddie Roach and his promoter Bob Arum, for avoiding me.”

Martinez also talks about his unhappiness with HBO and the way they have handled his career and will be leaving to sign with rival premium network, SHOWTIME which will carry his next fight.

I would personally like to congratulate Sergio Martinez for having the guts to stand up to the WBC, it’s President Jose Sulaiman and to HBO. Hopefully other fighters will take notice in what Sergio Martinez did today. Martinez took a stand on what he felt was the right thing to do, not only for himself but for the sport of boxing. No fighter should ever have to go through the constant games that the WBC and it’s President Jose Sulaiman continue to play.

If by some chance Sergio Martinez gets to read my article, I hope that he will do the right thing and give the suffering fans of this sport what they deserve, and what boxing needs, a real champion. Do not pull a Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on the fans, make the fight between you and Dmitry Pirog happen. Take on Grzegorz Proksa, Gennady Golovkin, Felix Sturm, or Daniel Geale sometime next year and let the boxing fans know that there is still a real champion in boxing.
