Former World Heavyweight champion ‘Neon’ Leon Spinks, 66, who shocked the boxing world by winning a 15 round split decision over Muhammad Ali on February 15, 1978, at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, only to lose it back to Ali 212 days later, has been hospitalized in critical condition in a Las Vegas hospital, and is fighting for his life.
The 1974, 1975 and 1976 AAU National Golden Gloves champion, and the 1978 Olympic Gold Medalist at 178 pounds in Montreal, Canada, Leon fought professionally between 1977 and 1995, and compiled a professional record of 26-17-3 with 14 knockouts. Although Leon failed to regain the WBC version of the World Heavyweight title in 1980, his brother Michael Spinks did win the IBF version of the World Heavyweight title on September 21, 1985, by 15 round decision over Larry Holmes at Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and defeat Holmes by 15 round split decision again in 1986.
No details regarding Leon’s current health crisis and health situation have been released. However, what is known is.
His wife and companion of 20 years, Brenda, reached out to boxing fans on Monday on Facebook to keep her husband in their prayers, with this official passionate statement, “Dear friends, I know it’s been a while. However, you know how I believe in the power of prayer. It’s been a tough year for us. Leon has endured a lot of medical problems. I’m reaching out to ask you to kindly pray for my beautiful husband Leon, so that he may overcome the obstacles (which again) have crossed his path. We love you all, and appreciate your support.”
