Heavyweight Alex ‘Destroyer’ Stewart Dies at 52. Fought Tyson, Holyfield, and Foreman

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Los Angeles, CA (November 20th, 2016)– World ranked heavyweight Alex ‘The Destroyer’ Stewart, who fought the likes of future and former world heavyweight champions Iron Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, George Foreman, Michael Moorer and Oleg Maskaev during his professional career, died on November 16, 2016, at the young age of 52. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Stewart represented Jamaica at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and won a Bronze medal at heavyweight in the 1983 Pan American Games. As a professional, Stewart compiled a record from 1986 to 1999 of 53-10 with 40 knockouts, fighting mostly in the United States, but also in his native Jamaica, and abroad in Hungary, Japan, Poland, and Russia.

Stewart did not defeat any of the five future or former world heavyweight champions he faced named above during his professional career, and also lost in the 1985 Golden Gloves final to future world heavyweight champion Michael Bentt the year before he turned professional. His November 1994 10 round majority decision loss to George Foreman remains controversial. Stewart gave Foreman a facelift, but lost 94-93 on two scorecards. The third judge scored the bout a draw, which many experts felt Stewart had won. Stewart loss twice to Evander Holyfield, the rematch resulting in a 12 round decision loss in 1993.
