According to his trainer, Joseph Awinongya, “Osumanu is in shape.”According to middleweight contender Osumanu Adama, “I’m ready to fight anybody. I’m a boxer, that’s what I train for.”
Osumanu Adama of Ghana won the USBA Middleweight title in 2011 by knocking out Marcus Upshaw in Illinois. He will be defend the belt next month at the Congress Theatre in Cicero, Illinois, on December 22, 2012, against trial horse Derrick Findley. Adama, who trains out of Joseph Awinonya’s gym in Joliet, Illinois, has a solid professional record of 20-3 with fifteen knockouts.
In Adama’s last ring appearance in March 2012, Adama lost a close 12 round decision for the International Boxing Federation Middleweight title to defending champion Daniel Geale of Australia, in Tasmania, Australia. In that bout, there were no ringside officials, and no checking of the opponent’s hand tape. Adama claimed to have had vision problems from round four on due to what his corner said was coagulant on the gloves of Geale-but there were no complaints made during the bout or after the bout by trainer Awinonya, and the bout result was not appealed.
In an exclusive telephone interview with Ringside Report, Adama reflected on the many procedural flaws which occurred during his 12 round International Boxing Federation 12 round title loss to Daniel Geale in Australia. “There was no boxing commission where I fought in Australia. There was nobody around when we wrapped our hands, and there were no officials in the dressing room or at ringside. We were very confused. So for my next bout I want the boxing commission over here in Illinois to be perfect, so my corner does not have the same problems.”
Findley, who was born in Chicago and lives in Gary, Indiana, has a record of 20-8 with 13 knockouts. In his last two outings, Findley scored an impressive fifth round stoppage of 10-1-2 David Thomas, and a second round stoppage of middleweight contender Ronald Hearns, the son of former world champion Thomas Hearns. Findley was contacted for his opinion of his upcoming bout with Adama but did not return his telephone message before the story went to press. A 2011 bout planned for Findley against Adama fell through when Findley instead fought 20-0 Fernando Guerrero for the NABF Middleweight title instead and lost a ten round decision.
Adama, reached by telephone in Illinois, stated “I have been waiting to defend my USBA Middleweight title. I’m looking forward to this fight, it is going to be a great fight. I would like for this fight to be seen in Ghana and all over the world so I can stay atop of the (world) rankings. I’m working hard with my power punches and my speed work. I throw a lot more power punches now. The fight result? It depends? I have good punches. I can knock him out in two. Whenever the fight ends, I will know at the end of the day. I always train for a long fight, for 12 rounds.”
Adama stated a preference to fight as well for the vacant World Boxing Council Continental Americas middleweight belt as well, in the hopes of obtaining a WBC world ranking and and title shot against WBC World Middleweight champion Sergio Gabriel Martinez or former world Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in an eliminator. “The WBC Continental Americas belt? Of course I want that belt. The WBC belt and its potential opportunities would mean a lot to me and my people, my trainer and my family, everybody.”
The Chicago Fight Promotion card promoted by Cynthia and Wasfi Tolaymat on December 22 is scheduled to host eight pro bouts, and according to Makeafight.com is scheduled to feature such fighters as cruiserweight Joe McCreedy, welterweight Vivian Harris, light welterweight Carl McNickles, featherweight Sergio Montes, heavyweight Boban Samic, and the junior welterweight debut of Semajay Thomas.
