World Boxing Association number eight world lightweight contender Dorin Spivey, the current North American Boxing Association Lightweight champion, issued a challenge to WBO Lightweight champion Ricky Burns and WBA champion Richard Abril to give him a title shot in 2013. Spivey says he can beat them. Spivey’s record, 42-6 with 30 knockouts,  is a dangerous consideration for any world champion.

Spivey explained why he would beat Ricky Burns and Richard Abril in an excusive interview with Ringside Report. “I want to fight Ricky Burns or Richard Abril for their world lightweight title in 2013. Yes I believe I can beat Ricky Burns on skills with fast hands. I have got the ability and power to knock him out. I’m actually faster than Burns, I throw a lot of punches in bunches. I put together six or seven punches in combination, and I am in shape to go 12 rounds strongly. Ricky Burns cannot deal with my style. Burns will never go the distance with . I throw too many punches in bunches, I don’t think Burns has fought a guy that fights like that. Ricky Burns is a good fighter no question, but I am that hungry and determined. Ricky Burns is a tough guy, but I will stop him in the later rounds.”

Spivey continued “Richard Abril is a tough guy, a tall guy who has a lot of height in reach, but I think my style will give him a lot of trouble because I throw punches in bunches, lots of combinations, which will give his style a lot of trouble. I do think I can put together a lot of combinations nonstop, bunches in bunches which will make Abril fight a fast pace. Abril is real tough at taking shots, but I will still beat Abril by late round stoppage. I think I will definitely outwork him with my work rate.

Both Ricky Burns and Richard Abril are great fighters. I have got a lot of respect for them. I like to take on a challenge and fight the best. They are considered the best at lightweight, and I want the opportunity to fight the best before my career is over.”

Regarding his recent NABA lightweight title defense against Rod Sulka, “Rod Sulka fought a smart fight. I fought frustrated because Sulka moves a lot. We could not find any video on Sulka. He had a lot of video on me. So this was a fight where I had to figure it out as it went a long, with a good steady jab. It was a good learning experience for me. We got the job done but it was not the prettiest fight.”

Regarding his future plans and his quest for a WBA or WBO world title shot, Spivey noted “If we don’t get a world championship bout soon, I will have to defend my NABA title, and hopefully then I will be in the number one contender position. Currently I am ranked eight by the World Boxing Association, but they should be moving me up higher because I just made a title defense. Right now I am looking at my next fight being in Virginia possibly in February 2013 for my hometown crowd. It could be Atlantic City too. I should know something soon, in the next few weeks. I always stay in shape and keep myself in shape, that’s the most important thing. Boxing is a passion, I have a passion for it and I love it and I have got better in my later years. I would like to close out my career by winning a world title and defending it a few times, that’s a goal for me. I’ve lived a clean lifestyle, never smoked, never used alcohol, never used drugs. “

Spivey’s trainer is John Hunter, 74, is the first former boxing coach of the United States Navy amateur boxing team in Virginia. Hunter previously trained world ranked lightweights Julian Wheeler and Sean Fletcher. “We have a great relationship, he’s like a father to me,” stated Spivey.

Spivey resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia, within distance of his mother and father, his two brothers and their families. A proud uncle of three, he plans to get married after his career ends “To avoid distraction. You don’t have to deal with the stress of the role of husband and father. For me, that motivates me because I don’t have to take on additional responsibilities. I want to become world champion, and I want to get there with my hard work and dedication and I do not need distractions.”
