Adonis Stevenson Wipes Chad Dawson Off The Map, Claims WBC Title

Montrael, Canada (June 10th, 2013)– The late Emanuel Steward has trained another world champion. It’s just that 35 year old Adonis Stevenson of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, has been fighting out of Quebec, Canada, in obscurity since he knocked out Mike Funk in the first round of their debuts in September 2006 at Montreal Casino.
Stevenson’s 21-1 record contains 18 knockouts, including a rematch win over Darnell Boone, who he lost to previously. There is the twelfth round stoppage of Chicago’s Don ‘Da Bomb’ George at Bell Centre in Montreal in October 2012, and the second round stoppage of 28-1 Noe Gonzalez Alcoba at Bell Centre in April 2012. Those wins should have set off alarm bells in the Dawson camp.
These Stevenson wins didn’t set off the alarms bells in the Dawson camp because his longtime trainer Iceman Jon Scully was not there. In an interview with Real Combat Media in Atlantic City less than a week before this fight, Scully, former principal trainer of Dawson, noted there were serious issues in the training camp, including weight loss concerns and behavior problems dealing with Chad in the Las Vegas while he was attempting to train Chad for Andre Ward at 168 pounds, with Dawson not listening to his trainer or following his instructions. Scully made up his mind to leave Dawson for good after the Ward bout and will soon set up a new gym in Florida, Iceman did not speak to Chad again.
Without Scully in his corner, and with whoever else, it became painfully obvious in Dawson’s brief bout with Stevenson that his training camp was a disaster without Scully, Dawson’s overconfidence stemmed from the fact he underestimated Stevenson’s hard work ability as a power hitter. Without doing the proper training or conditioning, and not being prepared to deal with a power hitter, Dawson got taken out worse than Antonio Tarver took out Roy Jones Jr. in their second bout.
Stevenson is now the World Boxing Council Light Heavyweight champion. He will be looking at WBC Silver champion Tony Bellew of London next, then perhaps Tavoris Cloud and Bernard Hopkins. Stevenson will no longer be considered the underdog to say the least. Steven’s first round stoppage of Dawson after knocking him down in the round of the year is probably the worst title bout of the year. Dawson, in this reporter’s view, did not look quite right entering the ring. Trash talk aside (and Dawson and Stevenson exchanged a lot of trash chatter before their bout), Dawson has issues in how he trains and how he loses weight.
With Scully, Dawson was on target. Without Scully, Chad cannot win. Chad’s training mistake is like Muhammad Ali dumping Angelo Dundee and Dr. Gil Clancy to be trained by coconut fudge. The proof is in the results. Chad’s ego got in the way long before he lost to Stevenson. Slowly but surely, within the past year, Chad Dawson has been losing to himself. The story is not a new one in boxing. ‘Superman’ Stevenson is probably not a superman or a superstar, but he did find the hole in the Dawson armor nobody else could see, proving in fact it was he that was a whole fighting level above Dawson, and not vice-versa as Dawson claimed.
Stevenson will have problems getting fights, if he beats Bellew and Hopkins, and which believe it or not seems to have gone beyond likely to becoming a foregone conclusion. George Groves and Andrzej Fonfara could also be possible future opponents for Stevenson. A Stevenson rematch with Dawson seems worse than a miserable excuse to sell tickets, worse than Floyd Patterson versus Sonny Liston II. HBO won’t pay for such a rematch, meaning Dawson is practically worthless now.
