Richardson Hitchins Stops George Kambosos Jr. to Retain the IBF Super Lightweight Title

New York, NY (June 15th, 2025)– Richardson Hitchins, the International Boxing Federation World Super Lightweight champion, retained his title at Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City on Saturday night, June 15, 2025, proving the onetime venture attempt into the 140 pound weight class of former World Lightweight champion Kambosos Jr. to be a huge mistake.

Kambosos did upset Teofimo Lopez by a 12-round split decision to become a world champion in Madison Square Garden in 2021. Since that time, Kambosos has lost to Devin Haney twice, defeated Maxi Hughes, and lost to Vasyl Lomachenko in title bouts at 135 pounds.

Kambosos, 22-4 with 10 knockouts, Sydney, Australia, is contemplating retirement. Hitchins, 20-0 with eight knockouts, New York City, has now won six consecutive regional, eliminator and world title bouts.

Hitchins used crisp left jabs to target the right eye of Kambosos effectively early on, and used height and reach advantage to keep Kambosos from getting inside. Head and body shots landing accurately had Kambosos in trouble in round five. Body shots from Hitchins had Kambosos in trouble in round eight, who finally went down. Kambosos beat the count, but referee Michael Griffin called a halt to the lopsided contest 1t 2:33 of the eighth round.

On social media after his fourth loss in six bouts, Kambosos stated “It’s a tough game but one game that I have always loved no matter what. I look at myself in the mirror and I know that I always believed in myself, took on the absolute best, and always chased greatness. A great trophy cabinet, a hell of a resume, so much love and support from the fans worldwide and a loving family. Win, lose or draw I always stepped up, that’s all people can ask from a fighter. Congrats Richardson Hitchins. It was your night, well deserved, respect and God bless your future career. Thanks to all the boxing fans for all the love and support. Just a warrior from Sydney that chased it all. God bless.”
