Honorable Mention for Fight of the Year 2022 honors includes:
Fifth place goes to Daniel Dubois versus Kevin Lerena which was on the same card in Tottenham as Fury versus Chisora, in a WBA regular World Title bout gone wrong. It was a nasty multiple knockdown thriller while it lasted reminiscent of George Foreman versus Ron Lyle in its knockdown exchanges, and its firm conclusion. Challenger Kevin Lerena knocked down Daniel Dubois three times, but with the WBA three knockdown ruled not recognized, Dubois got up near the bell and was allowed to got to go to his corner after the round ended. Lerena, down twice in round three, got up at the bell ending round three, but was not allowed to go to his corner, with Dubois given the third round TKO win. It later turned out the bell ending round one was sounded too soon. Dubois torn ACL in his right knee will keep him out of action for at least another six months, meaning his version of the WBA title could be vacated if he does not heal in time to defend it.
Fourth place (tie) goes to Devin Haney versus George Kambosos Jr. I and II in Melbourne, Australia, whereby Haney traveled twice for both bouts into enemy territory to decision Kambosos over 12 rounds twice in 2022 to unify the four major world lightweight titles. Short of Jack Johnson and DuJuan Johnson, nobody has gone to Australia with a title or to win a title, and exited successfully. From Shane Mosley to Osumanu Adama, manyhave tried and been unsuccessful in their journey to Australia, and for that laone, Haney’s rise is magical. The 29-0 Haney remains fearless and will fight all comers.
Third Place goes to Leigh Wood versus Michael Conlan at Nottingham Arena on March 12, 2022, whereby Wood, behind on the cards, scored the knockout of the year, sending Conlan through the ropes, down and out, to retain his World Boxing Association World Featherweight title in a major upset, also the Real Combat Media Knockout of 2022.
Second Place (tie) goes: to Claressa Shields versus Savannah Marshall; Katie Taylor versus Amanda Serrano; and Natasha Jones versus Marie Eve DiCaire. The three female world title bouts brought attention and credit the credibility and cause of female boxing.
First Place goes to Jermell Charlo’s tenth-round knockout of Brian Carlos Castano on May 14, 2022, at Dignity Health Sports Park, in Carson, California, to claim the undisputed World Super Welterweight titles, in their rematch.
