Dana White Cancels UFC 249
By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media MMA Correspondent
Las Vegas, NV (April 10th, 2020)– UFC Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White has called off UFC 249, scheduled for April 18, 2020, after being unable to find a way to circumvent the current Coronavirus Pandemic, and work successfully with the television networks to stage UFC 249 either at Tachi Palace in California on Native American land, or at an alternate island location outside the United States. The California State Athletic Commission has banned all athletic events until at least June 1, 2020.
White had already lost one of his main event fighters, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and had no location for UFC 249. White was still attempted to move forward with the event, despite the adversity of where and how. Without Tachi Palace now, White Is still attempting to buy a private island outside of the United States and stage events there, to avoid United States state and city bans against large gatherings due to the COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus.
It remains a Dana White extreme ‘fantasy’ concept to buy an actual island, set up a ring, and stage weekly UFC events there. The logistics of organizing such a quick island buy, equipment and personnel on an international scale proved to be too much for White to overcome now. White told ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto he was asked to stand down from attempting to stage the UFC 249 event by Disney and ESPN executives. With all other UFC events currently postponed as well, for the moment, for MMA worldwide, it’s ‘game over’.
