Thomas LaManna vs. Zab Judah in 2018 Would Be An Interesting WBC Match

Editorial By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Here’s an interesting bout proposal for Rising Star Promotions. Now that Thomas ‘Cornflake’ LaManna has fought to a 10 round draw with Gabriel Bracero, what next for LaManna and his World Boxing Council Fecarbox title at The Showboat in Atlantic City, New Jersey? LaManna, a father-to-be very soon, needs a significant new bout challenge.

LaManna, age 26, 25-2-1 with nine knockouts, Millville, New Jersey, stands 6’2” tall and has a significant and advantageous 74-inch reach. Much like his height and reach advantage with Bracero, LaManna would have the same advantage in a challenge 10 round WBC titular defense against former world champion Zab ‘Super’ Judah, age 40, 44-9-1 with 30 knockouts, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Judah, a former IBF and WBO World Super Lightweight champion, and a former IBF< WBC and WBA World Welterweight champion, has fought in 28 regional and world title bouts and eliminators, and has gone with 12 round distance in a world title bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. As such, Judah would have the edge on experience and knockout power.

Judah returned to the ring in 2017 after four years of inactivity, and stopped Jorge Luis Munguia in the second round at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, New Jersey, so traveling to fight LaManna in New Jersey would not be an issue for Judah. This past January 2018, Judah demonstrated his technical skills are still very sharp by scoring a 10 round unanimous decision win over Noel Rincon Mejia at Grey Eagle Resort and Casino in Calgary, Canada. Against Mejia, Judah won nine of 10 rounds on all three judges’ scorecards against an opponent even years younger.

The major issue for Judah against LaManna is the same as Bracero’s. Like Bracero, Judah stands 5’7 ½”, with a 72-inch reach. Judah would have to get inside on LaManna, and do significant bodywork to stop LaManna or outpoint him. Judah would have to throw caution to the wind, and risk getting hit by the taller fighter with superior reach. LaManna versus Judah is an even match on paper. Judah has two nice wins in his last two bouts, and the winner of LaManna versus Judah would be in a better maneuvering position for a big money fight for a world title at 147 pounds. This would be a must win for Thomas LaManna, who needs to focus on his career, and remain active in the gym to achieve his career goal to fight for a world title. For Zab Judah, this bout is a do or die must win situation. One thing is certain: This interesting bout will sell tickets, and sell out the house!
