The Hungry Heavyweight Prospects of 2016
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
The defense by Wladimir Klitschko of his World Heavyweight title (WBA-WBO-IBF-IBO) versus Tyson Fury approaches on November 28, 2015, at ESPRIT Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany. This leaves one remaining question: when the dust settles, who are the remaining hungry heavyweights?
If the boxing expert removes WBC champion Deontay Wilder, WBA regular champion Ruslan Chagav, former champions Bermane Stiverne and Alexander Povetkin from the picture, and contenders Steve Cunningham and Bryan Jennings from the picture, the heavyweight rising prospects alternatives become most clear-in terms of hungry fighters.
If Fury chokes, the British already have a bout in the works to determine the next British Hope for the world heavyweight crown. 14-0 Anthony Joshua versus 16-0 Dillian Whyte at 02 Arena on December 12 will determine the next great British heavyweight hopeful. The BBB of C, Commonwealth British Empire, and WBC International Heavyweight titles will be at stake. 16-0 Hughie Fury, Tyson Fury’s cousin, will fight in Avon on November 14.
Jarrell ‘Big Baby’ Miller, a 16-0-1, 6’4”, 280 pound monstrosity, would love a shot at either Klitschko or Wilder. 22-0-1 Charles Martin of Missouri is a low profile contender. 30-1 Travis ‘My Time’ Kauffman is active. Resilient Antonio ‘Magic Man’ Tarver, who keeps allegedly getting caught on steroids, 31-6 with 21 knockouts, will turn 47 in November. Nonetheless, Klitschko could fight Tarver soon because Tarver sells tickets and pay-per-view buys.
21-0-1 Vyacheslav Glaskov of the Ukraine deserves a world title shot. A few of his decision wins have been close and controversial, but Klitschko will see what he’s got anyway.
16-0 Joseph Parker of New Zealand, 15-0 Erkan Tepper of Germany, 26-0 Andy Ruiz Jr. of California, 16-0-1 Gerald Washington of California, and 23-0 Cuban southpaw Luis ‘The Real King Kong’ Ortiz all want a shot. 23-0 Australian Lucas ‘Big Daddy’ Browne, and 23-0 Kosovo Swiss fighter Arnold Gjergjaj. 9-2 Canadian champion Dillan Carman knocked out Donavan Ruddock to keep his Canadian title and is the longest shot of the bunch.
Tepper will fight 21-0 Robert ‘The Nordic Nightmare’ Helenius in Hartwall Arena on December 19 for the European and IBF Inter-Continental heavyweight titles in Helsinki to separate contender from pretender.
